starter gear oil seal

when my field coil was barely putting out 12 V, I was greeted with about a quart of warm oil gushing out of the loosened cover. the seal is on order and i can only hope that it is NOT like the crank seal on the distributor side of the engine on my '73 750 Four, which is lipped and obviously requires splitting the case....
but as to whether it's too late for my field coil, having undoubtedly been shortened out some by being immersed in a hot oil bath, guess we'll see.
any thoughts and experiences on the subject are welcome, such as why the old seal is sooo hard to drill into, and if you do have to split the case, has anyone done the unthinkable by grinding off the lip and gluing the seal into the case?
