My little GL1000 frontend project is coming along slowly and, to make some progress, I've been wanting to cut down my top triple to flatten it's profile.

No one I know can weld aluminum sooooo... I'm thinking of filling the cavities with JB Weld after nicking them up so it'll have something to grab onto then lopping off the lower bar clamps.

I "think" that's an OK long term solution since you see guys use it to seal up holes in the engine case and I'm going to paint them anyway.

Any reason I shouldn't do that? Or should I save up some cash and get a pro to fill in the cavities?

Yeah, look for the threads from a little less than a year ago.

A friend upgraded an h-1 triple and used all new, except he used the old speedo mounts machined and jb'd  on a corner to the new stuff. It's all hidden under the guages.

One of the pics on the thread here left the holes  and had colored lenses for  ignition, neutral and signal lights.

I guess you were the last post on this thread, but good pics here for triple clamp modifications:

Here's another cool swap idea, using JB weld to mount guages.  The trees and forks are off a Yamaha  rz500, mounted on a H-1 Kawasaki, the mounts for the stock guages cut off the old triples and glued to the donor triple clamps with JB weld. Hard to see it in the bike photos what exactly is going on  underneath, but the ridge you see from the top that is under the guages  is JB'd on. Preferrably use a cut that is not  perfectly smooth will give better adhesion.

It is easier to see what is going on by looking at the remains of the upper triple trees that were sacrificed.

Nice! Mine won't be anywhere near as radical a cut. Thanks for that!
