Re-installing the air box with carbs on the bike?
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:45:33 AM »
Finally got all the parts to re-install the stock air box. I currently have pods and the cable is adjusted just right.
Is it possible to re-install ALL the air box stuff without removing the carbs?

I think I've read somewhere that the easiest way it to remove the battery box and go at it from that angle...

But I've never tried.

On the 750, yes.

On the 550, no.  (Or should I say, not normally.  I'm sure someone out there has this really big hammer...)

However, if you have a hard time adjusting cables, you are going to be in agony putting everything back as it was from the factory. IMO

i just redid mine recently.  the easiest way i've found to do it:

-remember that you're only supposed to attach one half of the airbox at a time.  separate the upper & lower halves before you start
-pull the rubber boots out of the airbox and fasten them to the corresponding carbs.  cinch 'em down tight w/ the clamps
-push the upper part of the airbox into position, and push each of the carb boots into the holes as you go.  as long as they're fairly soft, they should go in just fine
-bolt the upper part of the airbox to the frame
-attach the lower part of the airbox to the upper, & you're done!

hope that helps!

What bike are we talking about?  I have never found a way to get the airbox on without removing the carbs on a 500, 550 or 79 650.  I don't have a 750, so I don't know about them.

I have done it a couple of times on my 750, pain in the butt but very doable.

 Oops, sorry...bike is a '71 CB500.

And Two Tired, I don't have problems adjusting the cable, but you know how it is....I hate undoing something once I've gotten it just right. The whole, "one step forward" thing....

I'm probably the one who posted that it's possible thru the battery hole.  For some reason I seem to be able to go that route pretty easily (I've done it twice now).  I did find that it wasn't as easy to remove the air box that way.  This is on a 550.
