Right crankcase oil seal damaged and discontinued. Advice?
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:11:39 PM »
My CB 200 has an oil leak around the kick starter spindle. We had the bike worked on at a local shop and I think they damaged the rubber oil seal when re-installing the right crankcase cover. Problem is that the oil seal is discontinued. I tried replacing the oil with a heavier weight but the leak is still present.

My question is, Is there a sealant that you guys have used that might be employed?

Thanks.

Just a thought, seals usually have their demensions molded into the outer face, or can be determined by measurements. Armed w/these  #'s give NAPA a call. Also, In the  day, Honda offered  not only top/bottom end gasket sets, but engine seal sets which were reasonably priced. luck G

There are dealers with old stock sitting around don't give up until you try a few. I hear western hills honda is good.

Have you actually taken the cover off and looked at the seal for damage? They may have dislodged the round coil spring from the inside of the seal when they re-installed the cover. If they did, you will find the spring on the shaft. (long shot, but I have seen it happen)

Honda appears to have used two size seals there, 14x24x5 and 13.8x24x5 on different years of the CB200. Both are still available from CMSNL and probably from US sources. Any decent bearing shop can get you the 14mm one, the 13.8 may be a bit more of a challenge from them.
Sliding a splined shaft through a seal often damages it but a bike shop should see enough of them to know how to protect the seal by wrapping a bit of thin plastic shim stock around the spline when sliding it through.
