Barn Find!
« on: June 26, 2010, 11:36:18 AM »
I purchased a 72 CB 750 this morning with 114 miles.  That is correct, a 114 original miles!

I pulled up to this guys house and he is only 4"8" tall & 73 years old and the original owner of the bike.  He purchased the bike new and was unable to ride it.  So to be able to ride it he switched the rear tire for a 16" tire, put the forks up through the front triple trees.  When the mechanic put the rear tire back on the bike, he forgot to put the master link cotter pin on the chain.  Several miles later the chain comes off and gets stuck in the front sprocket and the man lays the bike down and the chain cracks the case.  He began to replace the engine with another 72 750 engine that had an 836 kit, rods & hot cams.  He also fixed the case on the original engine and let the bike sit untouched since 1973.  That is until today!

The bike is complete minus the carb rack (someone swiped that) as well as the 18" rear tire.  He also cut the seat cushion way down so he could touch the ground.  Also took out the baffles out of the exhausts (they look like they will clean up really nice.

I will post some pics later, what do you guys think I should do with her?  It is way to nice to cut up and chop or cafe.  Do you think I should put the original engine back into the bike?  I do not think it would take much to be a museum piece?

Yes, put the original motor back in, it will increase the value of the bike.
But first, get the 836 motor running and get video of it, in case you want to sell it down the road.
I would also find and install the stock seat and rear wheel, will also increase value, nearly impossible to find a 750 with only 114 miles!

Post some pics for us and good luck.

Man, don't chop that bike. There are plenty out there in not so good a condition (assuming it is in good condition) for those projects. Still, congratulations on the find! How'd you hear about it? Craigs List? And show us some pics.

My first was a gold 72.

I say leave the 836 in for now & get it running.. then Ride the piss outa it as often as you can, wherever you can..see as much of the country as you can.. go to major bike meets, check out Utah & the Pacific NW..

... it will love it and so will you.

Awesome! I say chop it up.

::).... Yeah..cut it up so there are less good bikes for future generations... ???  With 114 miles she will be worth more restored. Then use the 836 for another build....Nice score..

I would hate to even ride it with so little miles! Personally i would restore it and keep it in my living room. Find another 750 to put the 836 motor in, and ride the piss out of that.

I look at it this way..
Yes its very low miles and worth bucks

But Depending on what he paid it could be a good solid almost a new ride.. which he may prefer over a new plastic POS.. that will depreciate..
when he has 35 K on this, it may be worth a few more times what he paid for it.. that would still be a good investment..
I can think of 25 K or rides that were well worth 3 k just for the experience.. Riding distance these day on a CB750 is not like riding the new bikes..

Pull the ODOMETER, put it in a closet with the stock engine.

Get the 836 going on a replacement guage, ride everywhere.. and when you are ready to settle down rebuild her to original.

Thanks for all of the interest and advice guys!  Sorry I posted the info with no pics, but my wife had the kids at the zoo yesterday and the camera did not come home till last night.

At this point, plan is to restore her back to perfection and then sell her/trade her.  I want an original early year bike to ride, I would hate to put a ton of miles on this one.

As promised, here are the pics:

Rear Right

Rear Left

Front Right

Speedo

Tank Paint

As you can see the bike is not perfect, but it will not take much to restore her back to prestine shape.  The guy had it listed with an XJ1100 and wanted to trade for a welder.  Not wanting to get rid of the unit I had he said he would take $950.  After seeing the bike I told him the best I could do was $700, we settled on $750.  Good deal in my opinion...

Anyone out there have a nice runner they would like to trade for this one, 73 or below in original state?

You can't get much lower on the mileage. NICE!

Yes........ great deal!  Clean it up, change out the seat and take off those crash bars and luggage rack, that bike is easily worth $2K.
Have you tried to start it yet?
