I'm getting ready to build only my fourth engine so please note that my opinion comes from limited experience. And here it is......
To build a "reliably fast" engine with the parts you are enquiring about you should first take "cost" out of the equation. If you can do all of the cylinder boring, guide reaming, valve cutting/lapping, and other associated machine work yourself then you are only looking at about $900(or so) in parts, tack on another $300-$500 if you have a shop do the machine work.If your willing to spend that then here's a recommendation:
Wiseco 836 pistons
Kibblewhite valves/guides/springs
Tsubaki heavy duty cam chain
Megacycle cam ( I use the 125/65 on my daily rider, probably as aggressive as you'd want to go and keep it reliable )
If you just want to keep the old bike running for another 100,000 miles and would like to do it economically($500or less) then:
Kibblewhite valves/guides/springs
Tsubaki cam chain
Keep your old pistons and add new rings, hone cylinder ( This option is reliant on the condition of pistons and wear of your cylinders )
reliability...as close to stock as possible...honda had it right
I agree
