would you replace this main bearing ?
« on: June 28, 2010, 10:51:56 PM »
this is in the bottom case of my 850 motor that has just over 400 miles on it

i want to replace it but im not sure if it is really necessary, the score is about .010 wide and .010 deep in the center at its deepest and shallows out to nothing on both ends with no raised edges, the corresponding journal is perfect as are all the other bearings and journals that i can see (the top half of the motor is still assembled)

   comments please
                       thanks

Do you know what caused it?
I would change it, after I found cause and fixed it

the motor is a total rebuild, i assume it was a metal chip or a piece of blasting media, every thing else in the motor is still perfect

Yes, and the upper half as well, and inspect the crank journal, and flush the oil galleys.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

ya, i did use glass beads but im not convinced that that is what coused this, I'm not worried about more stuff being in there, Ive changed the oil at least 3 times since the first start up and all the other bearings and journals still look perfect (including the cam)
I'm more curious about what could happen if it is left unchanged

I would think that if you left it unchanged that it would be a 'weak link' ....even if just in your mind.
What's the cost of one bearing while you've got it all apart vs pulling the engine again?

I put a gouge about thirty times worse than that into the big end bearing surface (on the crankshaft) for a rod on my 1983 Honda Accord.  The gouge was massive.  Probably 5 mm wide, 10 mm long, and half a mm deep at the worst.  I buffed it down with emery cloth and reassembled.  I put another 30k miles on that car before I sold it without any issues.  I was 16 when I bought that car, so you know I treated it poorly, but it still survived.

If you have gone 3 oil changes without any other issues, then you can probably assume you are safe... which is what you seem to have done anyway.  The glass bead theory seems to hold some logic though.  A glass bead would shatter after being ingested into that oil journal and would not make much damage.  However, the damage it would be able to make would be very noticeable.  I guess any debris could have caused it though.  It is remarkably easy to get a piece of dirt on the crankshaft when assembling.  It usually doesn't do much unless it is harder than the material it is sandwiched between.

i am changing the bearing, i knew that from the start even though i couldn't really come up with a good reason to other than that its only a $16.00 part and i already have the motor out and apart
it seems to me that that oil would just fill the score and the crank journal would just float on its oil film like normal

BTW: camelman, i like your avatar, is that Ron English ?
