1977 CB550F Muffler Question
« on: June 29, 2010, 03:03:45 PM »
I just bought a 77 CB550F and it does not have a muffler. I don't want to pay a ton of money for a nice new muffler as this is my first bike and I am still learning to ride. Can anyone suggest a good muffler I can pick up for cheap and install without re-jetting? The bike also came without air filters. I have purchased and will be installing Uni Pod Filters, so I supposed that should be taken into consideration. Thanks for the help.

If you are putting different filters AND a different muffler.. I think you are going to need to work on your carbs to get ideal performance.

Which means, of course, you can choose any muffler you like :)

Thanks. I am planning on working on the carbs before I get the muffler. Do you suggest that I put on the filters and muffler first?

you can clean them out real good and make them look good. do a bench sync. but your not going to be able to jet them without a little tinkering with the bike running. I'm sure there is a 550 GURU here that can give you a recommendation of what size jets to put in, but its all gunna come down to testing it.

Thanks for the tips. A little update. I cleaned the carbs, bench synced them (trying to find some vacuum gauges to do it proper), adjusted the air screws and idle screw. Bike is up and running all-be-it on the rich side. Next up: Checking the plugs and wires to make sure everything is firing. After that, I will experiment with jets. Thanks for the help. More tinkering lies ahead.
