im bored... became a quitting smoking thread
« on: June 30, 2010, 09:26:30 PM »
see....

i just watched a commercial for a product that helps u quit smoking... a guy is sitting on a Pier at the beach.. a shark jumps outta the water and latches on to his arm he takes the pill and in small writing it says... dramatization "product" takes up to five minutes to work......... you think! the only thing that they are saying is dramatic is the speed at which their product works!?! there's a shark on the guys arm and they want u to know the only thing misleading is how quickly his urges are stifled!?!  uggh

I'm bored, too. ;D

I don't get the opportunity very often, so I'm enjoying it while I can.

I guess they're going for the defeated "I'm quitting because I have to, not because I want to" smoker.  Which is a good marketing angle because that type are more likely to fail repeatedly and will buy their product on a continuous basis rather than just for a short time.

You're just trading one form of nicotine addiction for another.  I guess if you use it correctly it can help brake the habit of lighting up a smoke, but then you still have to wean yourself off the nicotine.  I never really saw the point.  I guess if it works for some people then great, but these companies aren't out to help anyone quit smoking.  They're in the business of selling gum to nicotine addicts and I'm sure they're more than happy for smokers to trade their smoking habit for a gum habit rather than actually quitting the drug.

That's definitely the toughest part.  I was lucky in that pretty much everybody I hang out with stopped smoking around the same time.  I think the need to smoke socially is probably more of a habit/oral fixation rather than the addiction rearing it's head.  Try something like cinnamon toothpicks or anything else to decrease the urge to put a cigarette in your mouth.

Even a cigarette that isn't lit can be a really good pacifier.  You just have to watch out for all the people who want to light it for you.

I find chewing gum helps but when someone elses smoke wafts past it makes it hard.....I will beat these filthy things..  If i didn't know people who still smoke it would be easy but i suppose there's going to be temptation everywhere i go so its just a matter of being strong..

What did it for me was the birth of our first child 2 1/2 years ago.  Ever since I started smoking in my teens I always told myself I'd quit when I had children.  I think having that thought permanently imprinted on my brain is what made is so easy for me to quit.

I'll tell you something that you will probably think quite strange. My kids are now 18 and 20 and have never seen me smoke at all, i never wanted them to smoke so i never smoked in front or around my kids, anyones kids for that matter..

I haven't seen those commercials before...I'm thinking of trying the lozenges. Yes, I agree with Gordon that it's trading one addiction for another, the obvious difference being that one of those addictions will likely kill me while the other one won't.

The Nicotine is really not that bad for you, so if you just chewed the gum for the rest of your life you would be fine. It is not a bad thing to not inhale smoke and kill the cravings.

i thought nicotine cause hardened arteries and heart disease..... i was lucky and didnt start smoking till around 20 (i dont know why) but would start and quit for a few years never really getting hooked but i worked in some halfway houses for youth and one thing they really focused on was "healthy" coping skills like what was the thing you turn to for stress relief some people turn to music or whatever... these skills are developed in the early to mid teens ( the common age most smokers start). but  part of the quitting is dealing with constant reminders and the other big part is dealing with the alternate coping skill under stress...... people who are thinking about quitting should evaluate the reason for  each cigarette.. liek is this one for stress is this one for boredom is this one for after dinner or after sex then find something better to replace them with... but what is common is to switch addictions just find one thats healthy

I can, and have, totally quit smoking for weeks without the craving or desire to smoke another cigarette ever again. That is, until I've had a beer. After that, I can put away a whole pack in one night.  :-\

P.S. The lozenges taste so bad that you'll want to take up smoking to quit using them.

That is the hardest craving for me to resist. If i am drinking, I have to have a cigarette. Any other time i can go without, but once i've had a few drinks i can't resist lighting up.

I started smoking when I was 14 and finally quit the buggers 7 years ago this September.  I was real nervous the first time I went out socially for a beer, but made it through no problem and now never really think about the possibility of re-lighting.  I find that as the years go by, I have really come to dislike the smell of smoking and other smokers (no, not the smokers themselves, just the way they smell ;)). My mother still smokes and every time I visit her house I feel I'm sleeping in an ashtray.  :-\
I'm glad I quit, I just wish it had been sooner. Oh, and one other thing, my quitting finally helped convince my younger brother to give them up himself. He's been smoke free since October of last year!
I quit cold turkey, he used Chantix. Whatever works for you.... ;)
