Ceased Master Cylinder Piston
« on: July 01, 2010, 08:57:19 am »
Hey Folks
I've got a master cylinder I'd like to rebuild but the piston is ceased all the way down.
Standard 70's black anodized of the CBs.
How can I pop it back out without destroying the housing?

I used compressed air and blew it fifty feet across the driveway so be careful.

I'd be careful with compressed air in those things.  Once the resistance force is removed, the air will still be applying force, essentially setting up a small weapon.  If you go with an incompressible fluid (such as brake fluid), then the whole thing is a little safer.  When I remove brake pads, I unbolt the caliper from the pivot arm, and then squeeze the brake handle until the pad comes out.  You generate much more pressure that way than with typical compressed air, so it is bound to move.

Is that the piston you were talking about though?  I thought you mentioned the master cylinder (on the handlebars).  If you are rebuilding the whole thing anyway, then just shove it out with a screwdriver.  Be careful about scratching any surfaces inside though.  Some PB Blaster will help too.

Well not even the power of 100 psi air got it out. Had to take a screw driver and force it out by the lip, piston push side.
Here's why, see picture.

You might want to consider running a 12mm flex-hone through it before rebuilding it. Looks pretty nasty.

Good idea! Now to go blow more money on ebay for a rebuild kit.  ;D

The after markets don't seem to work well.

Call your local Honda dealer with the part number.  They can probably get it for less, and you don't have to pay for shipping.
