diagnosing engine problem 1971 cl350
« on: June 25, 2010, 06:35:03 PM »
I recently picked up a 1971 cl350...got it running today on both cylinders, and there is a loud tapping at idle, followed by hella smoke (white-oil) at throttle on... I want to know if that means my rings (just the right cylinder) are shot? or is this maybe indicative of a greater problem below? And also where is the best place to find reasonably priced rebuild kits? I found some on ebay etc... bikebandit and all that but just curious where Y'all are finding vintage engine goods. Thanks in advance.

Loud tapping could be a lot of things.  Best way to find out is to open it up, and you're gonna have to do that anyway.  A twin is a breeze compared to a four.  The engines are really light and there's half as much stuff. :)

Check out David Silver Spares and Z1 Enterprises for parts.

Have you tried a compression test. This should really tell you if there is a problem with the rings.
