Aftermarket blinkers don't blink
« on: July 01, 2010, 01:25:50 pm »
I can only imagine how many times this question has been asked, but here goes:

I installed smaller aftermarket turn signals (bulbs, not LED), and now they do not blink, nor does the buzzer sound.  It was working great before.

I have read that these bulbs probably do not draw enough current to flip some switch, but I would appreciate a more detailed answer.  Where is this "switch" that flips to cause the blinking?  What is it called?  And most importantly, what do I do to make them blink again?

Or is it something else?

I will try to post a picture of the signals to get an idea.  They are not from Carpy, but look the same.  (aluminum rectangular)

The stock blinker unit is a thermally activated relay, basically when you activate your turn signals they draw about 23 watts through the blinker which heats up a bimetallic strip which then bends until it disengages the circuit, as the strip cool it retracts, going back to the default location and repeating the process, which is why LED turns and some newer more efficient turns don't blink with the old unit.

If I'm wrong about something somebody correct me.

They turn on but don't blink, or they don't turn on at all?

How's your battery? Mine won't blink without a full battery charge.

You can get an electronic flasher at any auto parts store that will blink at the same rate regardless of the current draw from the lights.  They cost about 10-12 bucks.  The only thing I don't like about them is that they start blinking in the "off" position, so there's a slight delay between hitting the switch and the blinker coming on.  I like the bi-metal type blinkers better because they're instantaneous so you can do a quick blink and then lane change.

I just got done doing all of this and it was the flasher relay replacement that did it all.

You go and get a 3 prong electronic flasher relay (do a search for the type)

Take the original one out, it's a two wire relay but you will notice an extra green wire in the same area that you will now use for the new 3 prong relay.

Do a search on what wires go to what prong but it's as simple as that.

Will take you 5 minutes and $10.
