Headache While Working Out
« on: July 01, 2010, 06:35:35 PM »
I've been working out a lot lately and noticed something I've never had before.
I've been getting headaches up the back of my neck, up over the back of my head, and behind my eyes every time I get about 15 reps into a set.
this is only without a huge warm-up session.
If I warm-up for about 20 minutes, it's not as bad but it's still there at about half strength on the pain-o-meter.

Never had this before, so I decided to look into what's changed from the last time I worked out hard and didn't get headaches.
I eat alot of chicken and rice, fish and sweet potatoes, and tons of random fruits and vegetables.
Everything was the same except the type of drinks I've been consuming.
I realized, I've never really had anything containing Aspartame, it was purposely avoided because it was weird.
But until recently, that's all I've been drinking.
Only because I'm out of work, it's a dollar a box, and you can make 16, 16oz bottles with it. (I water it down)

I've been mixing these and drinking about 6-8 16 oz bottles of it a day, not thinking anything of it.
                until now.

I'm going to try an experiment and discontinue the use of aspartame all together to see if there is any change.
It's not in any of the other foods I eat  so it should be easy.

I'll post results.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

One time I was buying dried papaya and snacking on it during work, about 15 years ago.  I liked it.  But for about 6 months I'd get terrible headaches.  Then I read that the dried papaya could cause headaches.  I quit eating them and the headaches went away.

I don't know how true that is, or if it was all a placebo, but that's my headache story.

Black tea of any kind has always given me a headache, ever since I was a kid.  Made it kind of tough growing up in Texas when the only thing to drink at most people's houses was iced tea.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it were the aspartame causing your problem, though.  That stuff is nasty.  I'll never understand the perceived need in our society for artificial substitutes that are worse for you than the thing it's replacing.  Hydrogenated oils, high-fructose corn syrup, saccharin, olestra, etc...

Normally I can't either, but a tight budget does terrible things to a man.

Somehow I'm sure this is a government conspiracy to keep you unable to perform above the level of their chase dogs. ;D

Yep, all the fake sweeteners affect me the same way - at least plain sugar your body recognizes and can deal with...

By the way, if yer on a budget, why drink anything other than water at all?  It's free!!

IC.  When you got o the super market, don't buy anything that isn't for sale in the outer perimeter aisles.  When you get into the middle aisles of the store, you start to find the crap that kills you slowly and makes you less fit to outrun the governmental chase-bots.

Drink water instead of some sweetened piss.  Eat organic food as much as possible and stay away from fake junk.

Regarding hydration when drinking water, eat a little bit of something when you drink.  Your body will absorbs water faster when there is a bit of nutrients/electrolytes in it.  That's why gatorade works so well.

Artificial colors, high-fructose corn syrup, etc.

If they need something with some flavor how about juice?  Even cheap frozen concentrate is better than Gatorade and Kool-ade as long as it's all natural.  You can drink it during your work-out, too, just water it down so you're not getting so much sugar.

And if you can't seem to break the Kool Aid habit, at least get the packets and mix it yourself.  You'll loose the high fructose corn syrup that way.

I would always get headaches, sick, nausea, etc whenever I had my morning workouts. I always made sure I ate (and ate right) at least an hour before my workouts. Turned out to be very low blood sugar. I tried many different things like the power gels, hell even diabetic glucose pills. Solution to my problem? 8oz of pure pineapple juice. Packed with natural sugars, I would drink it about 15 mins before my workout. I was an animal and had tons of energy. I drink a small can before every workout now
