Boyer Brandsen Ignition
« on: February 13, 2006, 11:09:58 AM »
I am getting ready to buy an ignition system for my 550 and I had stated that I wanted to go with one from Old Bike Barn. I thought the one I wanted was the Dyna-S but I looked again and found it to be a Boyer Brandsen Mark 3.  I have heard about Old Bike Barn being a hassle to deal with so I am asking if anyone knows of another supplier for the Boyer Brandsen MKIII.  Also, does anyone have some experience with one of these units?  I do not want the Dyna because it is just a points replacement, I want something that will adjust timing and all that fancy crap.

volz - not sure if you posted this before you saw my z-1 link, but check on their site - they have a flowchart for finding the ignition and coils for your specific bike - very easy and foolproof.

the guys are very good to deal with (i thought) and were very polite in answering all my newbie questions.

Boyer's are AOK, seem to do the job nicely imo. You could also consider a Newtronic, they work just as well, though the ignition box is a bit bigger. I have both types on my bikes , 750 & 400 respectively, there's not much to choose between them. Haven't tried a Dyna, yet, but I may do sometime soonish as I gather you can get one with a rev limiter, which could be useful for my 460/4. How' do the prices compare? For reliability, I'd invest most in coils with replaceable HT leads and buy new NGK caps for them.
