Potential worth for HM340 pipes?
« on: February 07, 2006, 12:18:16 PM »
Hey all,
I just started on the '73 CB750 last night, and took the old pipes off. MAN was that a bear! Anyway, a couple of the pipes are good, but a couple are not. Chrome on all the head pipes is good, but the lower two muffler bodies have the requisite 33 years of rust and rash damage.
My question is this- are the outer two pipes even worth anything without the inners? I'm talking ebay here. I don't expect a mint for them, I just wonder if they'll even sell. If they won't sell if they're not in a set, I won't bother cleaning them up. If they will sell onesey-twosey, then I'll clean up the good ones and sell them. I'll be going either with 4-2's or drags (I have both), but if the stockers (which don't do anything for me) are worth something to someone, I'd send em that route.

Definately save the two good ones, either to sell or keep in case you want to go back stock.
Better yet, never get rid of ANY part that isn't a wear item for the time you own the bike. Spares of anything are always good. Speaking from experience, my two cents worth.

Well, I finally got out to the garage to clean the eons of gunk off my pipes. What I found underneath was NOT GOOD. Of the four, #1 was the best, and that's about being damned with faint praise, comparatively- it has some acid damage on the inside, and I think there's a dent in the pipe. There's also quite a bit of oil crust on it, from an overactive chain oiler. After seeing the acid damage, I stopped cleaning so judiciously. #2 has VERY large holes, and the centerstand bumper is slightly canted because the material behind it is as strong as a used tissue.
#3 (the lower of the right set) has a dent like the rider went over a curb, or perhaps tried to use a standard bike lift... #4 has thin spots near the bottom seam, and 2, 3, and 4 have cancer where the pipe meets the muffler body. All four are missing their baffles. I think the best thing about the set is the pillion's boot guards!
The head pipes, oddly enough, are in fabulous shape- there's a slight bit of surface corrosion at the clamps, but a weak bit of working at it took a goodly amount off. They all seem to be straight, and under the yellow goo and some surface corrosion haze, the chrome is actually very nice.
Given all this, is there ANY worth to them? Can a person cut the old mufflers off and weld new/repro's on to the head pipes? Should I just sell the boot guards, and scrap the rest?

Any cancer is a bad thing, sounds like they're pretty much gone. Really not much you can do to repair them. Someone who wanted to instlall slip-on type mufflers might want the header pipes if they are nice. Like you said, save the heatshields, be a shame to throw away a good set. There are fiber washers underneath the mounting screws of the shields. They're purpose is to keep the shields from "buzzing" from engine vibration. Keep those too if they're salvageable. My .02 worth....

Not really, as a) I'm not in NZ, nor do I want to pay shipping from there, and b) I hadn't planned to keep these pipes anyway. I only wondered at their potential value to someone ELSE, which I now know is about nil. I think I'll cut the mufflers off the pipes and scrap them, and try to sell the head pipes and boot guards.
