charging problem??
« on: July 05, 2010, 05:10:32 PM »
I may be panicking for nothing (hopefully) but maybe I'm not.

I took my bike (cb550) home on thursday (07/01) and it has been in the garage while I get my bike licence.  I've started it everyday but haven't let it stay on much.  I have ridden it across my block and in short jaunts I've managed to put 3 miles (5km's) on it.  Today I figured I was gonna let it warm up fully, ride it a bit around the block and then leave it running for a half hour or so.

After about 20-30 minutes of idling in my driveway I turned off the bike, went to restart it but the battery did not have enough juice to restart the bike.  Keep in mind that I picked up the bike with a Brand new battery installed.
I'm thinking I did not ride it enough to actually charge the battery (never even got out of second gear), and besides a few throttle squeezes in first gear I never did ride the bike much.

What is responsible for charging the battery in this bike?  Is there an alternator??  or did I just simply not ride the bike enough to recharge the battery?

Good Question you can find a lot on this site
and you are gonna have to do the leg work and trouble shooting work yourself

www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com

READ the Faqs and Tips on that page

check out this page. I found it to be very informative and its free info and if you need some updated parts I highly suggest you look at this guy's parts.  They got my bike going and I now have the confidence to ride cross country (if i had the money and time)

Idling like that drains the battery as they do not produce the replacement electricity until ~1800rpm. Get a Battery Tender and it will be ready to go when you are. Hopefully thats all there is to it. Sometimes bikes for sale get new batteries because there is a problem with the electrical system and the old battery is toast.
