72 cb500 "SILVER BULLET" (video)sept10/10
« on: July 03, 2010, 10:33:13 PM »
After selling my other cb500 in the spring I could not pass up this one!!
It is missing the seat and a side cover and there is a crack in the top of the triple tree...AL which can be replaced!!!
The old guy told me the bike turned over but haven't run in years so I went to look at it and to my disappointment the engine was stuck...locked up!!!
He wanted $175 for it but I got it for $100  as I looked it over more and more before I bought it I noticed that there was not a wrench mark on any bolt or screw and it only had 5800 miles on it, so I loaded it into the truck with a grin from ear to ear!!!

That night I pulled the plugs and dropped some transmission fluid down the cylinders and yipeee...the next morning it kicked over with ease....I was a happy man!!! I then removed the carb for a closer inspection and clearly could tell that they had never been opened up and they were really clean and just gave the jets a little cleaning and installed them back on the bike!!
I then had the pleasure of trying to remove the the oil filter bolt....after about 10 mins of cursing I got it out and replaced it with a aftermarked one and gave it a new filter and oil and it was now ready for start up!!!

I also had a broken petcock on The tank so I used the tank off my cb750....so here is a little video of the start up!!!!

That was my intention...and the agreement I made with my better half, but I really like the bike.
So I hope I can convince my better half to let me keep it!!!

I painted the tank today using rattle cans, it turned out ok...I think!!
I used dupli color silver rim paint and some dupli-color clear, I know it wont hold up to gas but I think a few good coats of wax might help it!!!

Nice work, the tank looks good!  I like your dent puller, I wish I would have did that on a tank I did several years ago.

I used the Dupli-Color high heat and clear on my CB77 engine covers.  It sat several months before I put gas in the tank. It has had a bath in gas several times and I never had any problem.  I used the silver Dupli-Color on a Yamaha tank, and it didn't take fuel well.  Maybe it's helps to let it cure for a while.  Better be careful when refueling :)

I'd suggest getting the correct hardware for the brake line.

Got some parts in the mail today, big thanks to NIKKISIXX for the top triple tree clamp
also got my left hand control switch, and a right-side cover which I still have to paint!!
I also removed the rear tire for the new rubber!!!

For those of you that are missing the spacer washers for the top tree I went to Canadian tire and found a exact thickness
10mm lock washer which measured 0.093 inch which someone here had measured .....hope its correct!!!

Made some progress over the weekend... painted  both side covers, and welded up some farmer special exhaust from some exhaust pipe from canadian tire and some big washers on the back of the pipes to give it some back pressure, until I can afford new one's, and I also made use of an old kawasaki trail boss seat I had until I find the right one!!!

I also took the time to fix my electric start!!!  I took the solenoid apart and sure enough it was stuck with corrosion so a bit of cleaning and a little dab of oil put it back together and bingo....it worked like a charm. It sure feels good when you fix something your self!!!! :P :P

Just a little update, The bike died on the hwy yesterday and the wife had to come to my rescue!!!
It was having a charging issue, and I have since fixed!!!
By looking at one of the plugs comming from the rectifier the PO must have hooked up the battry the wrong way and replaced the melted wires but didnt do a good job, so I just cut the plug out and hard wired it...and all Is now in working order!!!
Took it out tonight for a 25 mile ride and all is good!!!
Here are a couple pics of the plug and of the bike before and after....I still have to find a stock seat!!!
