I scored these for $80 off a local guy dumping a bunch of extra parts.  They were rebuilt professionally.  I had the bowls polished...and had a set of velocity stacks laying around, waiting to be mounted.

Here they are...

Any ideas on finding or making screens for the velocity stacks??  OR  do guys just leave them "open"?  ...which doesn't seem right to me...

this thread is hilarious. Awesome, but hilarious.

All this work you're doing to undo someone else's cafe project, you could have just bought a local snotter and saved yourself  $1500+

It is easier to work with a clean bike though...

Good luck, it looks great so far.

I just scored a Black Bomber Gas Tank...and i'm gonna see if I can make it fit without bastardizing the tank too badly...

Pics to come as soon as UPS gets here.  ;-)

Re: SoCal Mut-N-Chop CB750 Cafe - Wheel Bearing Replacement
« Reply #61 on: January 05, 2011, 12:47:23 AM »
So while the wheels are still off the bike, I figured I'd swap the wheel bearings.  Well...like many of your posts I've read here...I'm ready to sell the M@t&$R F#&(ER just on account of the retainer rings.  Can some rational human being explain to me why these things must be so effing hard to remove???  In addition, could Honda do us all a favor and just inscribe in the metal which way to turn them to get em off??  I've read many posts and i get that these things can be a real pain.  But for the love of GOD...this is just plain retarded!!

Exhibit A - Front Hub

I'd rather not "F" up the rear so could someone please tell me for each of the pics below. "To remove, turn ___________." (left or right)

Exhibit B - Cush Drive Retainer Ring

Exhibit C - Inner Hub Retainer Ring

Drill the punch marks slightly then turn counterclockwise with an appropriate tool. They can still be a bear to remove.

I've never managed to remove the front bearing retainer without ruining it... or the rear one come to think of it!!!

+1  I use a small drill bit to drill out the punch marks then I make a tool to fit into the 2 indents in the wheel bearing retainer.  Tool:  Get a piece of plat bar from the hardware store then drill and tap the bar the same distance as the two indents in the retainer.  Thread in some small bolts and you are in business.  I have never had too much trouble removing the retainers this way.

So I finally fabbed the tank to fit the cb750 frame.  And now its on to fabbing the tail.  It is being made out of a custom alloy piece to flow with lines of the Black Bomber tank.  Its gonna be amazing...IMHO.  Take a look...but disregard the paint job...it was just for mock up...will be polished alloy / paint combo.

Forgot about this build....   can't wait to see it finished.   You have definitely won me over to the whitewalls.

Great look to the whole thing.

Gotta ask a couple questions:  On that swing arm -   A 1980 CB750 ?  Was there any modification that you had to do to it ?  Did it just bolt right up ?    How much longer is it than the original ?

BOTM candidate for sure.  Hurry up and finish so I can nominate it.

Thanks, Greenjeans!  Working hard to get this done.  I put it down for the past couple months for the most part.  but now I'm back at it full force...

Swingarm: 1980 CB750 DOHC, its 2” longer

1. Remove end cap and needle bearing from "lopsided" side of swing arm. Trim the swingarm .25" with an angle grinder and a plastic ziptie as a guide. ALL the length comes off the "lopsided"  side of the swingarm.  You'll know when you see it.
2. Debur the cut end
3. install new needle bushing and put the end cap back in.
4. Shorten inner race by the same .25" on a lathe, its hardened steel.
5. Drill out the holes on the frame at the pivot point to 41/64 inch to accommodate the 1980 16mm pivot bolt
6. Mount swingarm and grease the pivot
7. Have fabbed custom spacers to perfectly aligned sprockets.
8. Use the early hub, cush drive and brake drum. Use late model axle.

Thanks, Hednut!  Cant take all the credit...a member on here actually made all the welds for me.  I just designed it and he worked his magic.  But its a little too short.  Going to add about 1-2" to the seat area...

Thinking of making these in fiberglass if anyone would be interested.  Takers?
