socalenduro - agreed. this issue is being considered and being addressed.

unfortunately my plan entails cutting into that nice platform behind the electrical bracket... but it will be under the tail hump, invisible wen finished and a relatively easy fix. But in the long run it will fix the issue.

this is my first build and I chalk this one up to trial and error.

If you dont mind limiting the travel you can also get a bumper that fits over the shaft of the shock. kinda a ghetto way of shortening the stroke....

here is a quick visual of the last step I may take to increase suspension travel tolerance. i've measured the tail bubble and everything would still fit nicely underneath...only thing is that the battery will sit on that incline instead of flat...

Electrical question:

So I am wiring up all the gizmos in the headlight bucket. A weird thing is happening. First, I put a switch on the headlight to reduce the load on the system during start up...due to sized down battery. Also, the bike has mini LED turn signals with an electronic flasher. The bike is not running yet.

I turn on the key and with the headlight switch turned OFF...the turn signals will work...flashing...left and right sides both work as they should with the turn signal switch. If you turn the headlight switch ON (with the headlight plugged in), the turn signals stop working.

Here is where it is confusing me. If I unplug the headlight from its switch so no load is being put on the system by the headlight, the turn signals will starting working immediately and continue to work with the headlight switch BOTH ON OR OFF. But plug the headlight back in and the turn signals stop working again.

So the problem begins with the introduction of the headlight load on the system. Could the load from the headlight make the flasher or the mini LEDs no get enough power to function?

I tried removing the flasher from the equation. I hard wired the turns sigs (they won't flash now obviously) and the system works. The headlight plugged in works AND left/right turn sigs illuminate.

The headlight is drawing its power thru the headlight fuse and it is the only thing powered there. The flasher is drawing its power from the the black lead before the headlight fuse....

...the flasher seems to be the weak link. Any idea why and how to fix??

I sure would like to know what you did to make the 1980 swing arm fit.

There is so much conflicting information on this site.

Did you have to remove material from the swing arm to make it fit, and did you remove material from both sides,or just one side, and which side?

Did you have to change the swing arm bolt?

Thanks for that VERY good photo of the stock 1971 swing arm and the 1980 swing arm side by side. Excellent!!

BTW....What is a So Cal Mut-N-chop build?

BTW....What is a So Cal Mut-N-chop build?

First, remove the needle bearings from the 1980 swing arm. Second, there is a long side of the swing arm mounting point...the right side. It is 1/4" longer than the left side. Remove the 1/4" from the long side. Third, replace needle bearings. Fourth, remove 1/8" from both ends of the inner race. Fifth, bore out the frame mounting holes to accommodate the 1980 Swingarm bolt. Sixth, install swing arm. Seventh, measure and install new spacers for the rear axel to get rear wheel centered.

SoCal Mut-n-Chop...stupid name I just threw up there. SoCal - Southern California, Mut - cuz there are parts from at least 6 different bike models, Chop - i use this term lightly but I chopped off unneeded pieces of the frame, chopped off the rear brace and welded a platform for the electrical.

EDIT: You must also use the 1980 rear axel and chain tensioners.

I think you have started a new genre of cafe bike...Mut-n-chop-cafe.
Cafe CB750 with parts from other models and years.

UPDATE:

Parts came back from paint:

Assembled the headlight bucket:

Really like the mini turns sigs from Working Class Choppers:

Put the side panels on the gas tank (still looking for emblems):

Ran the fuel lines very discretely:

Installed the oil tank:

Mounted the tail section to studs into the frame and nylon sex bolts:

Put drywall mollies thru the seat pan so they "pop" thru the rubber grommets in the tail section:

Seat pan installed...next is foam and upholstering:

Custom foot pegs:

Installed the exhaust:

Still working out some last little electrical issues before I fire it up.

Agreed. Been following this one for a while. Can't quite put my finger on what it is that draws me to it, but I sure do love the style.

thanks guys! I am excited she started up first try...but ran really rough. Surprised she ran at all!!

Here's why. I pulled the carbs apart to get a look at the rebuild job a local guy did for me. It was bad. He installed two of the floats upside down. One of the floats was bent all out of whack and the float heights were all off. While he did replace all the seals...he didn't replace the gummed up jets. So I removed, repaired and reinstalled ALL the floats. Set the float heights. Did a bench sync to 4mm on each. Set the Air Screw to one turn out. And waiting on some new jets to come in the mail (#120 and #40)...they needed sized up.

Hopefully that will get her closer to a purrrrrrr...
