Introduction / 1975 CB550
« on: July 05, 2010, 03:02:41 PM »
Hello everyone!

I'm writing to introduce myself.  My name is Andrew and I just purchased my first motorcycle a few weeks ago.  It is a 1975 CB550 and I'm having a great time learning about it and tinkering with it.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the resources on this website and this forum.  I have been reading everything that I can get my hands on.

It came with an owner's manual in really good shape, which I scanned and would like to share.  Here's the link (please let me know if there's a better place to post this):
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8463449/1975_CB550F_MANUAL.pdf

I will also post a few pictures of the bike.  I apologize for the low quality (believe it or not, I'm actually a professional photographer but I haven't taken any pictures with my good gear yet).

Thanks again for the great information.  I look forward to learning more.

Thanks.  Funny as it sounds, the green sealed the deal when I was debating the purchase.  Love the color.

Had a 75 CB550. I really liked it.  Made the mistake of selling it.
Welcome to the madness.

Haha, nice.  I've got a bit of a fade on the right side of mine, too.  I was thinking about repainting it after I restore a few little things (cracked side panel, etc...).  Here's a question, how do I go about matching the original paint color?

Hi Andrew...I just picked up the same bike (but a 78) and I am absolutely fixated and fascinated by the bike and this wonderful community.

Thank you for the scan of the owners manual.  Although mine is a 78 I dont think there is much difference in the owner manuals.

Just in case you haven't looked through the main page content, there is a 78 CB550K manual in the Books, Manuals, and Guides section under CB550.

Here's the direct link: http://data.sohc4.net/OM550/1978cb550manual.pdf

Hey Andrew.  Nice to see another Indy person here.  There are quite a few of us from Indy here on the forum and the surrounding area.  Great bike.  Love the green!  I have a '74 550 in Orange and a friend I work with has a '71 500 in Gold.

In what part of town do you live?

Nice looking bike, enjoy it and welcome to the forum!
Lots of good folks here with good info!

My avatar shows two 1976 550's
The brown one (K) I got as a freebie!
The blue one (F) I bought brand new.
I want to die like my grandfather did...in his sleep and not screaming like the passengers in his car!

Thanks for the welcome!

IndyFour:
Really good to see an Indy presence.  This 550 is my first bike and my head is spinning with the growing list of things I want to work on with it.  I'm really getting caught up in it, but I've got to pace myself with my limited mechanical experience.

I live on the south side (Greenwood/Southport area).  Any word on where other sohc4 member live in town?  The guy I bought the bike from mentioned an Indy vintage bike club and that he connected with some good people through it.  Any experience with that?

I have met only a few of the forum people from here in town personally.  CBJoe lives just blocks from me as it turns out.  I've also met MCRider.  Both are great guys.

I started riding when I was a teenager but then have just recently gotten back into it about a year ago when I bought my bike.  When you have an older bike, you learn pretty quickly how to diagnose problems when they occur.  Get yourself a manual (you can download a Honda shop manual somewhere here on the website for free).

Two shops that I've used alot here in town and really like are:

CycleOutfitters (South Madison....kind of your area)....great shop for helmets, jackets, and just general cycle merchandise, gear and maintenance stuff.

Cycle Recycle (East 10th street in the ghetto....kind of near my house) http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/  This shop has anything and everything you will ever need for your old Honda.  I've bought sprockets, tubes, turnsignal stems, a fairing, tappet covers, petcock parts....you name it, he has it and probably used and cheap.  He can also order new stuff.  The guy who runs the shop is a bike guru....however, he has some "personality issues"   ;)  Expect to have them open later than their posted hours, to wait in line, to allow him to be interrupted by phone calls, and to deal with a strange dude.  The parts are cheap, though, and he is generally helpful and friendly.  If you've never been to the shop, it's something you must experience at least once.  Parts literally cover every surface of the shop (even the ceiling)....and he knows where everything is exactly.

There is a Vintage Bike Night the first Thursday of each month at Harolds Steer In restaurant at 10th and Emerson.  Apparently it's been going on for a couple of years and I never even knew it...and that is like 6 blocks from my house.  I went to the one in June and it is a neat event.  People just ride in, walk around, eat, visit, drool, whatever.  Come and go as you please.  You should come in August.

Finally, go to http://groups.google.com/group/indyvinmoto  and sign up for the IndyVinMoto news group.  You'll hear about all the vintage bike activities and stuff.  There's also a TonUp club here in town, but I think most of that stuff is announce on the VinMoto board.

Hope that helps.  Let me know if you're ever up for a ride.  I'm in.

Great looking CB550 arshaw.I always liked the CB550's. I had a 76 many years ago. Just like yours, but mine was dark brown. Like the saying goes, if I knew than what I know now of course I would of never sold it. Where did you fine this nice bike at and did you get a good deal on it?

Welcome!  I also bought a 550 recently and am restoring.

You will be able to find the paint color but if your going to paint your side covers and try to match your tank, it will never be exact [paint fades over time].

You're lucky to have other forum members in your vicinity, wish I did.

Good Luck.

Definitely plan to keep everything on this one stock.  Maybe if I have a good experience with this restoration project I'll buy a beater in a year or two and have some fun with a cafe project.  One thing at a time, though.   :)
