Why won't earlier 4-4 pipes work on a 77-78?

They use a different mounting method at the engine and in the rear(I don't have a K bike so not positive about the rear). The headers line up the same so if your bound and determined and don't mind doing some mods to your bike I don't see why you can't make'em fit.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

yeah, they will work. the switch isnt too difficult.

what you need to do is get some of the mounting flanges from an earlier bike. you will also need the finned collar type clamps to hold it on. they are different than yours too. the flanges unscrew from the head using countersunk phillips screws. you will need an impact driver. keep the screws to reuse if you can, or to match up replacements to.

on your 77-78, you will need to remove the studs from you head. then remove the old exhaust gaskets and put new ones in. install your earlier style flanges over the gaskets with the screws. then the earlier style exhaust slips on and is held by the clamps.
