removing electrical tape residue from rubber parts
« on: July 02, 2010, 10:28:22 PM »
One of the rubber pieces that connect the air box to the carbs cracked up so the PO wrapped electrical tape around it.  I don't think the electrical tape is really doing the trick since the crack is in a corner where the tape is likely to not reach very well so I want to replace it with liquid electrical tape which has served me pretty well in the past.  But now the rubber piece has the electrical tape glue all over it and I want to get it clean before I patch up the holes.  What would break down the glue without damaging the rubber?  I saw GooGone, rubbing alcohol and WD40 but I don't know how these things affect rubber.  Something I can just leave it soaking in for a few hours?

Not that I can be certain, but I reckon you'll be close to the money using WD40. Another option might be 'Zoff' Universal Adhesive Remover.
Chemists (pharmacies) sell it here. It's for the removal of adhesive from plasters like you'd use for first aid. It's okay for human skin so I reckon it should be safe enough for rubber?  ???

Just squirt some WD40 on a clean shop rag and wipe the adhesive off with that. WD40 is VERY friendly to rubber and plastic parts, you have nothing to worry about, I wouldn't bother soaking the part.

Using liquid electrical tape I'd be very careful to be sure the stuff is well cured before you run the engine, the suction through the carb boot may be strong enough to suck some of it into your engine.....and that would probably be a bad thing, right?

WD40 works great. Also good for getting tape goo off of wiring harnesses.

Goo Gone will remove the adhesive residue no problems.  No real soaking required, spritz it on, let is sit a couple of minutes, then wipe if off with a terrycloth rag that has more Goo Gone on it.  Paper towels don't work as well, the fuzzies on the terrycloth make it workd pretty well.

naptha & a rag takes off most adhesives and also works very well on chain lube spatters and tar balls from the road.
