gaitors on a 78 CB750?
« on: May 05, 2005, 10:32:12 AM »
I’m building a café style bike off a recent 1978 CB750 K8 that I picked up. I personally like the look of the older style gators for the front forks, which would make this bike look more period correct.  Can I simply use these gators over my existing front forks (with build in dust seal)?  I’ve never seen a pre 77 front fork up close, anyone have a picture with the gaitor removed?  Searching tells me there is some sort of groove for the gaitor to sit in, but I cant picture it.

On my `72 CB500 the gaiters were totally trashed and I the installed the dust seals off of a `78 750,fit perfect so it should work the other way around.

I'm running gators on my '78. I can't say "for sure" they are '78 forks but I think so. I just removed the dust caps and popped them on. I got mine from old bike barn http://www.oldbikebarn.com/

I put generic gaiters on my 400- hose straps hold them down and zip ties hold them up. Looks good and they'll make the seals last forever.

I've heard they will eat pets and small children.  I bet the turn signial screacher ticks them off too.
These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

Hello, let me know if you still require a photo of the lower forks.

Mine are apart and I can take a photo this evening and post it later today.

Cheers,

Lou in Cold lake, Alberta, Canada.

I don't think you'll have a problem with the lower forks - the gaitors attach just like the more modern dust caps.

However, you will likely have a problem with your headlight ears.  The old style have the groove for the tops of the gaitors.  Presumably the newer ones do not.

hi pull the caps, get 550F2 gaiters, and theyll fit in exactly the same groove in the sliders at the bottom, and at the top they should clamp with lil stock clips under the bottom chromy bit of each headlamp bracket/shroud, the bit that fits over the lower yoke clamp on each leg

Hello again,

I got busy im my garage this weekend and took a couple of photos for you. (see attached)
I think this will give you an idea of what they should look like. These photos are from new items
for a 73 CB750K3. I'm really looking forward to final assembly and riding.

Cheers,
Lou.

Hi there,

headlight ear, gaiter ring and gaiter are all new.

Fork lower has been polished using a brick of "jewellers rouge" and an 8" buffing wheel on my bench grinder.

Works wonders on aluminium and chrome parts.

Can't wait to see it all assembled.

Cheers,
Lou.

Bump to an old thread...

I also have a 78 CB750 K8 and would like to put gators/boots on the front forks.

I am wondering how and where the top of the boot will attach to my fork (see pic) and also if there is one boot that would be better to use than another since this fork was not actually designed for them?

Thanks for helping a noobie!

Member 754 has made a retaiining ring for clamping the upper portion of the boot. He is planning on making some for sale in the future. He has alot of interested parties by the looks of things.

Awesome.  Thanks.

I wonder if a black zip tie would hold it right under the blinker bracket if you really cranked down on the zip tie?

Stock gaiters have about 5/16ths clearance , all the way around at the top. I will make some more adaptors for stock gaiters in the near future..
