Any of you had any "run-in's" with other riders?
« on: July 07, 2010, 12:38:03 AM »
I'm pretty new to motorcycles, and was out for a ride the other day. Some dude on a Harley got up behind me, revving his engine, then swerved past me, cussing at me with his middle finger in the air.

I didn't know "honda hate" was that bad.

Anyone else dealt with this?

Just another road-raged a-hole.  Probably wouldn't have happened if you weren't on some stinkin' Honda.

I would say that's very unusual and will probably never happen to you again. You were unlucky to meet the one in a thousand idiot! Don't let it put you off :)

Stupidity is worldwide. ;D
When I was a teenager I came upon a fallen rider who I knew was the "Prez" of the local bikie chapter, his Triumph was lying sideways across the road and he was face down behind it just over the brow of a hill.
My parents always tought me to lend a hand to those in need and I didn't hesitate to park my 350 and drag him off the road, I went back and recovered his bike placing it on its' stand.
He stank of booze and it was no secret why he hadn't stayed aboard his bike.
Then over the brow of that hill came about ten of his mates, ignoring the fact that I had stopped to save their buddy they began abusing me and one idiot kicked my bike.
I left, idiots....they are everywhere! :(
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Not much of a problem like that around here.  We often wave as we pass even.  I use a two-finger side-ways peace sign technique.  If they don't wave back, it's easy enough to turn it into a single-finger salute!  ;D
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Harrrrrrhhhhh...

You must have been on a very flat, straight road.

Harley Riders are usually out their depth once they have to lean more than about 3 poofteents on a quant-second from the vertical.

Maybe he was making up for all the times he had been passed as he rode into a gas station. Insecurity Plus+

Don't sweat it. Spend a lot more time on mountain roads and you'll be free of the Harley Curse forever more.

What I like about the hard-(lard)-arse HD rider is the "Wide Stance" on the bike. That is, Apies and footpegs that are about three feet apart.

What that tells me is that his balls are so big that he has to have his legs spread real wide so's that he don't scrunch them up like, you know, we've all done at some stage!

I just quietly laugh to myself and keep moving in my own direction.

I wave to all on 2 wheels I'd say 85% wave back and less than 1% have the balls to get nasty. I get a lot of second looks, what was that old bike, it sure is clean for a bike that age.

I have noticed around here the older the bike (with a nice refurb), the louder the oooh's and aaah's even from some of the real bad a** biker types. The jerks tend to be doctor's lawyers and indian chiefs that do not have a clue how to ride let alone take their white knuckles off the grips and attempt a wave!

Years ago, (1969, 1970-72) it was a huge problem, especially when the Japanese CB750 started asserting it's superiority over the Harleys of those days (kinda like now, still...). It, and it's riders, were called all sorts of derisive things, and the fallout often caught the smaller Honda riders (especially when alcohol was involved). It got REAL bad when the Kawasaki H1 triple came out: 1/3 the displacement and twice the acceleration of a Harley 74, for a fraction of the price. I had to outrun several groups myself, not that it was ever an issue on my Big Four...  :D  And, I was in one of those groups myself. That's where my moniker came up: everyone else had Harleys and Triumphs (and one BSA) while I rode a Superhawk and my CB750. But, they tolerated me because I was the group's best wrench at the time. We had the usual issues with the rival groups: my particular brand of speed always got me out of serious trouble, though!

It's mostly about testorterone vs. self-image, IMO. Once the self-image improves, the juices become less relevant. "Live above it", that's my motto.  :)

I remember the Japa/biker rivalry well here in NZ, every Easter my area of NZ would be invaded by every bikie gang from around NZ.
We used to keep a low profile from the Angels/Devils deciples/Devils henchmen/Satans slaves etc but one Easter as we cruised down a long straight road a group of maybe 8 of us approached a set of traffic ligts where a huge group of Bikies were waiting for a green.
We quietly drifted in amongst them and before they could react (badly) the green came up and while they fought for control off their clumsy ape hangered bikes, we blasted through them ha ha.
Only one bike, a BSA Rocket 4 from memory could even keep up with the Suzuki 250 Hustlers in our group but he couldn't get near the Rebel 350's Titan 500's or my mates Kwaka 500 lol.
Ah I still remember looking in my mirrors to see that large group of smellies coughing their way through a cloud of two stroke smoke ha ha ha........oh yeah then we got out of town for the day, went up to lake Tutira ha ha...........ah memories. ;D

Back to the original question, I doubt you'll see that kind of response much.  Dude was just exercising his d-bagness. Most motorcyclists are pretty chill.  Except for the d-bags who almost hit the cycling group I was in the other day... and then tried to pick a fight with me when I confronted them about it at the next town... while I was dressed in spandex.

I'm always confused why the "machos" always want to roll around on the ground wrestling a man wearing spandex.  I think they need to move to the Castro to embrace their true sexuality instead of living their machismo lie.

Geez! I had totally forgotten about those guys! Scared the sh__ out of me one afternoon when I stopped for a Coke in Varennes; they all mounted up and followed me - on my BSA A65F - out of town. Once on the highway I nailed it and they disappeared into the distance. Good rush, though!

the only run ins I've had so far are with older Harley riders who tell me all about their SOHC4 they had when they were 20 years old and how the tweeked it out.  Sometimes they buy me a beer and want to offer me about 1.5 hours worth of trickery for faster  acceleration.  I would say you probably ran into some a-hole who would have troubled you even if he was on a huffy!

Surprised to hear of your misadventure. It's too bad that happened.

In CT there are a lot of both types of bikes and I would have to say the worse offenders are usually riding the modern go fast rice rockets. These are the gang wanna be with numerous tats and piercings.

I ride both; I have an older Harley and two 1976 Hondas. Never had a real problem with anybody. Could be my body language doesn't promote such dealings. I'm also a cop!

Funny thing though. We have a weekly run up to Marcus Dairy in Danbury CT every Sunday.
Kind of a see and be seen type of event. When I bring the Harley I'm just another in a sea of bikes.
Whn I ring the Honda I get a crowd around the bike!
The typical statement is "I remember when bikes had chrome fenders!"

Again, sorry you had such an experience. Wish it would happen to me...in town!

Of course there are buttheads who drive motorcycles.  I don't believe these BHs are brand specific.  The motorcycle community isn't without arrogance.  I'd bet some even ride SOHC4s.  But, I don't know any.  :)

However, I can imagine a scenario where the BH in question was partially justified.

Let's say a newbee is taking it slow in traffic and an experience guy who moves through traffic at a much faster rate comes up behind the newb.  The polite thing to do would be to move over and let the trailing MC pass.  If the newb continues to block, it frustrates the trailing rider about as much as it would if a cage driver was blocking the path.
If the Newb still has the typical cager mentality, he'll assume he should stay in front cause he was there first and all others can stay behind.

If I am holding up traffic, I generally get out of the way, even when lane splitting.  I rather expect others to do that, too.  But, it seems to be a courtesy dying out as the older generation does.

Anyway, if you were blocking the path with disregard for those behind, you may be lucky you just got the finger.

Yes, newb's should drive slower.  No, they shouldn't demand others drive at their pace.

Then again, there are Buttheads everywhere.  And the sooner the newb realizes that ALL other drivers on the road are trying to kill him, regardless of vehicle type, the better the chances of long term survival.

Yes, there may be only one in  ten thousand that wants you dead.  But, it only takes one to ruin your blissful ride. It'll be the one you didn't respect, or assumed would yield to you.

Cheers,
