Topic: What was he thinking?!! (adhesive on oil filter bolt)

Background:  Free bike, abandoned at apartment, given by landlord, major electrical problems.. mostly by previous owners trying to repair, carbs removed and cleaned but didn't need to be, most
mechanical systems in good shape, bad tires, the rusted tank cleaned and lined, electrical problems
diagnosed and repaired.  Close to ready to try and start.

Then I noticed some black goo by the oil filter bolt... Adhesive!!  Why would anyone put adhesive
on that??  Did they think they would never have to change the oil filter again?  And not just any
adhesive. some new-fangled space-age high-temp super-strength stuff.  After an arms race
of increasing levels of destructive force (brute torch, oil, heat, pounding, more heat, sawing part of
flange off, chisel, more heat, sawing more of flange off, more brute torch) I almost have all the
flange removed so that the oil filter cover will slide over it and the bolt will be exposed... next
saturday, god willing.  Then I'll have to weld and smooth the oil filter cover to receive a new bolt...
whatever that's going to cost.

Space age adhesives should be controlled substances, like heroin and explosives.

i guess it must have gotten loose one day and he figured "what the hell?"  i'll just put this space age polymer epoxy flux capacitor on it!     i mean, really, does tightening a bolt ever really solve the problem of bolt looseness?  only temporarily if you ask me.  but space age adhesive???  THAT's PERMANENT!

Just think of all those pesky bolts that never stay tight you could us it on.  We wouldnt ever want the key to fall out either.
Sad thing it he was most likely proud that he got it to stop leaking.

   My guess is the PO was trying to fix an oil leak/weep. When you get it all apart, check that there is no damage to the housing (round hole where the bolt passes through). A new oil filter should include all rubber rings, including the small one that goes on the bolt. Some people ignore the small o-ring and after a couple/few oil changes I can see a leak developing in this area.

Check for a spring too. I guess some came with a spring for a bypass but I dont ever remember having one.

Not that I'm trying to burst your outrage bubble but the oil filter bolt is a frequent subject of frustration, without any applied adhesive.  The PO may be a doof for sealing the oil filter bolt (maybe he didn't have the oring?) but the bolt seizure may or may not be related to this goop.  Good luck.

+1 on that- I fought with the oil filter bolt on my father's '80 CX500 for the better part of the morning last year, until we had rounded the head off and used every grabbing tool we owned between us including pipe wrenches.
The last thing to come out was the Craftsman bolt extractor set, the one that bites into the OUTSIDE of the head of the bolt. I chose one that seemed suitable, tapped it in place, put a wrench on it, and prayed. That sucker bit right into the bolt, and with a loud crack, the bolt came free. It wasn't stuck to the oil filter housing, it was stuck to the CASE.
When he got a new bolt, we put a skim of antiseize on the threads of the bolt, and had no troubles or leaks. Fortunately, we, unlike the previous owner, noted the torque value for the bolt, and found it easy to remove at its next oil change.
Sounds like that goo you've got on there is JB Weld... too many people confuse that for a proper tool, it seems. You may wind up cutting off the entire head of the bolt, slipping off the filter (check for that filter spring), and then taking out the stem of the bolt with a large pair of channel-lock or vise-grip pliers. You can still get them from the dealer or online, but one to look for is a repro that actually has a LARGER head than stock. Comes in REALLY handy.

Dont bother trying to repair the filter case just get a secondhand one ALL the fours are the same

I had to put a hack saw blade in my sawsall & cut the cover off. Last resort, but it worked. Bought a nice cherry used cover, bolt, spring & gaskets for $15 including shipping on ebay. the adhesive is probably not what was causing the bolt to not come off.. it was probably just stuck under it's own power.. There have been tons of threads about stuck bolts.. You are definately NOT the first one this has happened to...

BTW.. I always use a little RTV on my drainplugs on my vehicles.. Hell I've even JB weld's a drain plug into place only to break it lose easily the next oil change.. there isn't an adhesive out there strong enough to permanently hold a bolt in place.. except maybe Epoxy
