Introduction
« on: March 06, 2006, 09:49:46 AM »
Hey Guys,

My name is Clint and I live in Newnan, GA.  I recently purchased a 76 CB750 project bike and I am in need of advice.  I bought the bike from a guy who said he could not get the timing right.  He also admitted that he was not mechanically inclined.  Yesterday I gapped the points but the right side was so worn that they wouldn't close.  I also put a timing light on all the cylinders and only #4 was firing.  So I am going to buy new points and condensers for the bike but should I go ahead and buy new coils also?  Any more advice on what could be wrong?  Something I am overlooking?  I have worked on cars for a while but not much experience with bikes.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Clint

Very rare for coils to fail.
Put new points on and then check the wiring on the 12v side to the coils.
Then check continuity between plugs 1/3 and 2/4.
Post back.

Oh, and welcome...  8)

Ok, now for a stupid question.  How do I tell what type of 750 I have.  K or F model, etc...?

Thanks,

Clint

Alright,

CB750F2001993
CB750E2517105

Does this mean that the engine and frame are not matching #'s?  The bike is in my dad's shop so I called him for the VIN.  Will have pics in a couple of days.  Also, I do not like the tank on the bike, has a flip up lid to fill with gas.  I know the older bikes didn't have this.  Anyone interested in a trade?  My tank is in pretty good shape with no dents.

Egil posted this in response to a similar question:

CB750F (jan-feb1975)
frame from :1000002
Engine from :2500004

CB750 F1(March1975>Nov1976)
Frame from :200003
Engine from:2600004

The frame and engine numbers never matched - don't worry about it.

Thanks for the help Steve.  But from the numbers it looks like a F1 frame with a F engine ???  Was that common or has the engine been swapped?

It's quite possible that the engine was made a couple of months before the frame. The frame has quite a low serial number.

When looking for parts or info, just say you have a '75 F1.
