Keihin CR26 HELP!
« on: December 21, 2010, 05:38:00 PM »
OK

So I decided to pull the trigger and order a set of Keihin CR26 Special carbs and when I received them I found a few surprises.

Firstly, I should mention that I asked that the set of carbs be re-racked with a 77 x 100 x 77 spacing similar to that found on the Kawasaki KZ900’s. This spacing is a perfect match to the intake ports on the CB550 head and would require custom intake manifolds similar to the ones Bwaller used to mount KZ Mikuni carbs.

To this request I was told that it would be no problem, just a small additional charge of $41.00 to re-space them to that specification.

When I received the carbs I found the following.

Since discovering this, I have been told by the vendor that the supplier claims all would be fine and that there isn’t a longer throttle shaft available so not to worry.

What says you experts out there?

I'm a bit surprised they would sent them this way. Probably not a big issue that the shaft is too short. Is there just one spot where the shaft hole/seal lip is an issue?

You could give them a whirl as is or, pull the shaft fill the hole and machine round again, or buy SS shaft and make your own.

Nice carbs man, would you take a pic straight through the throat please?

Brent

Just one location where the seal is breached, but wouldn't that cause tuning and syncro issues?
I'm looking into getting a stainless steel shaft and replacing the whole thing.
Pictures to follow as soon as I get my Bwaller intakes sorted out.

Cheers

I would like to see a close up shot of the underside of a slide at some point, can't remember what they're like.

Although I made some, the credit for the intake manifolds should go to TG.

Sam

I purchased the Carbs & K&N Pod filters through a place called Power-Barn as recommended by Godfrey from this site.

Mike at Power-Barn is a great guy. Very helpful with a "Can Do" attitude. Others I spoke with just said that there are no CR26 carbs available for the 550 and I would have to use the 29’s if I wanted to go that route. Mike however, said “No Problem” getting CR26 carbs and at what ever spacing I wanted.

When I emailed him these photos, he was as shocked as I was and offered to refund the whole enchilada if I didn’t want to keep them. He also said that the conversation with the sales manager at Sudco (supplier) suggested that this was the longest throttle shaft available and completely acceptable.

When I spoke to Sudco today, Chad (sales manager) was quite rude and reinforced that all CR Special carbs using the wide spacing (ie: Kawasaki KZ, Suzuki GS & others) would receive this setup. That surprised me as I would have expected a longer and better fitting throttle shaft than this as an acceptable factory unit.
