Hey All,

Bought my first bike ever about three weeks ago, a '77 550F and can say i'm thorougly happy.  Joined this a while ago, but havent been able to formally introduce because i've been busy riding  . Now for the question, After three weeks of happy electric starting it will now only kick start. I'm guessing that this is because my batter needs to be charged, and after searching a bit people seem to be recommending the battery tender since it doesn't exceed 1.2amps, but the question is 6 volt or 12 volt version? I assume 6, but I'd rather ask your experience than waste my money.

Isn't 6 volt for really old systems? I think it's all 12 with these bikes...but I may be way off.

Keep your battery charged though, and be sure to test your charging system... I was riding my 750 for 2 weeks as the battery got lower and lower, then it went to kick start only, then it left me stranded a mile from my garage... these bikes will die on you when the battery gets too low... and they'll run like crap for the last mile or two.

Virtually all "modern" bikes, post 1970, are 12v. Exceptions are some smaller scooters, some really off the wall brands. Even post 1960 most jap bikes are 12v, my 1968 CB77 (305cc) is 12v. But in the 60s you'll find more exceptions especially with non-Jap bikes.

Probably money or time would be well spent on trying to figure out if the battery is ok or if it is not receiving adequate charge. Either of these conditions will likely get worse with time, whether or not you use the battery minder.
