Tried a test drive.....Was not successful. - UPDATE!

 Ok, I haven't ridden a motorcycle/dirt bike in 17 years. When I pull in the clutch and put my bike in 1st gear, the bike jumps forward and shuts off even while the clutch is pulled. What is the correct adjustment to get the clutch to work so I can get it in gear? It is a 1975 cb550f. Thanks.

If the bike has been sitting without being ridden for a while the plates may be stuck together,you have to pull the clutch cover off and remove the plates,squirt a little oil on them then reassemble..my 750 did the same thing.

Ok, my first question before shooting myself down a hill after not riding for 17 years is this. Could it just be a simple clutch adjustment, or is it definitely locked up as the other thread suggests?

If you adjusted the clutch per Honda manual and it is not releasing, then the plates are likely glued together.

Have you tried rapid RPM changes while the clutch lever is pulled in?

I haven't tried that. What exactly will that do?

Let all the slack out of the cable adjusters..at the handlebar and at the cover..isnt there a lock type screw(a screw with a locknut on it)..with all the slack out of the cable,crack the nut loose and turn the screw until it stops..im not familiar with the smaller bikes but you screw it in on some till it just stops,dont force it.then back it off 1/4 turn or so and lock the nut back down while holding the screw in place with a screwdriver.Then use the cable adjuster at the cover to take out most of the slack,do the final adjustment at the handlebar.If that doesnt work more than likely the plate are stuck.

If you pull in the lever and put the bike in gear,does it roll?If not,somethings amiss.

No I haven't tried the rpm thing. I adjusted with manuel.

So I put the bike in 1st, and pulled the clutch. The bike still wouldn't budge. I rocked it back and forth with the clutch engaged and it broke free and rolled. Am I out of the woods? It seemed to free up the clutch, still rough, but not locked. I can't try to do it with the bike running because its dark and rainy out. Maybe tomorrow.

 Now that the plates are free, you might want to re-adjust everything.

 My CB500 had similar issues when I was getting it back on the road after a long time being dormant. I had to take the clutch basket apart. I could pull the discs apart with my fingernail, but that's all it took to get it working properly.
 I wasn't happy with the adjustment, though, so I took off the aftermarket clutch cable and installed a good, used genuine Honda cable and that made it even better!

with the bike not running it will roll when you pull in the clutch and it in gear? I have adjusted mine like the book says but not runnung it will not roll in gear with the clutch pulled.

Shouldn't a bike always roll freely when you engage the clutch?

To my knowledge yes. I plan on looking into it in the future but I do not run it right now because it needs the exhaust worked on and the clutch. Mine sat for 10 years before I bought it and the clutch cable had a washer put in the clutch cable on the handlebars so I think either someone did not want to get a new cable or did not know how to adjust it. I may need to rebuild the clutch.

my 71 CB750 had the clutch plates stuck when I first started it up and was doing the same thing.  I started it up got it rolling down a hill pulled in the clutch and kicked it into 1st gear this way it wouldn't die on me.  I rode it around for a few minutes shifted a few gears and that seemed to do the trick.
