Pandora and the Music Genome Project
« on: July 09, 2010, 08:29:03 AM »
I'd never heard of this service until I was surfing apps on my blackberry.
Unfortunately my bb doesn't have 3g internet service, (lame) so I can't leave the WiFi hotspot.

but most other phones work fine everywhere, my friend has Tmobile with a myTouch phone- works great in his car through the bluetooth on his head unit. But you could use any other form of connection if you wanted to.
He has a really nice system in his truck and the music comes through nice and crisp with good low end.
Nothing like some internet radio services I've heard. (all sizzerqueep) i made that word up.

It's a cool service, you type in a song or artist you like, and it makes a station on your phone that plays music from that artist and artists like them. even obscure music. you can have a bunch of stations and if you don't like a song you can either skip it or ''thumbs down'' it and go onto the next song.

The only problem I had was, you only get 6 skips or 'thumbs down' an hour with the free version...
but you can restart the app and it clears the 6 back to zero.

I have Pandora on my Android phone and it is great to use in the car.  On long trips, plug the phone into the car's aux adapter and let Pandora run.  Like having satellite but better.  The only downside I've found is that the app tends to be a battery hog, so you have to plug the phone into the charger if you are going to run it for a length of time.

Love it.
I even pay the $30 or so per year for the upgraded service for one of our shops.
its a great way to discover new music.
Unlimited >> and fewer ads.

we have a nickname for it though...
Dave Grohl Radio or just DGR
it seems that every 3rd to 4th song on stations like, Tad, Dinosaur Jr, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, QOTSA, Sublime...etc, have Dave Grohl in the band. (Nirvana, FF)

wow!  haven't heard of Pandora??  i thought everyone has!  it's gone quite downhill over the last year or 2, MUCH more ad's, and the selection seems to have decreased, as in they repeat a lot of music for certain artists...  i beta tested for them in 02 as my buddy's uncle worked on setting up the music genome project from the beginning!

have you hear of last.fm?  it's bigger than Pandora, and i think it's a lot better!  i got to Pandora for certain stations when i know i want to hear certain songs relatively soon...  check out last.fm

I listen to Pandora on my computer at work.. Absolutely love it, and it's turned me on to some music that i hadn't heard before.

If i wasn't so cheap i would get a phone that supported it.

Love Pandora although only certain artists can be found on it so you do seem to get repeats if you listen a lot.

Its handy at parties where everyone wants to take over the ipod and play their jams, just ell them to pick a pandora station and leave it alone.
