attaching emblems
« on: July 09, 2010, 05:53:57 PM »
there's a thick black putty that's very sticky that they use to attach car windshields - don't know what it's called - but has anybody used this stuff to attach tank or side cover emblems?

yes be careful to seal around the emblem or air will get under it and literally blow it away.  my honda emblems have been on 2 years

Sounds kind of messy and should you ever want to take the emblems off (like to repaint), you may destroy the emblems in the process.  I used double stick foam tape (the 3M exterior rated stuff).  There's no way those emblems are going to come off of there on their own.  If ever they need to come off, you just "saw" through the tape with tooth floss and peel/stretch the remaining tape off.  Just a suggestion.

No I haven't. It does not harden like you will want for the emblems. I'd use some kind of epoxy like JB wield to put them on with. It will not take much just a dab on the mounting pegs should do the trick.

+1 on the 3M tape. Think to the future when you want to remove without destroying!

One more for 3M :) Make sure your surfaces are clean and smooth, you wont have to worry about them coming off.

the 3m tape sounds good - guess it holds up to heat - seems like that would be a concern, in ga anyway

And another +1. Emblems have been attached for about 15 months now without a problem.

Are you guys just using the tape in addition to the little "emblem clamps" that went in there originally?

OIC.

I've been worried about mine flying off in the wind since I put everything back together. Maybe I'll pick up some tape as insurance.

The 3M double sided trim tape is crazy strong. I was worried about it until enough time had gone by I forgot to be worried about it. ;D

Edit: Forgot to mention my bike sits out in the rain and occasional sun all year as well. Good stuff that tape.

I have used the 3M tape for tank badges on a bike, it's held up for a good two years and it's still holding strong.  Good stuff!

The emblems won't fly off with the 3M tape if properly applied-- meaning clean and sufficient surface contact. 3M knows what they are doing and the product is made specifically for this purpose, or at least for automotive use.

The 3M tape is amazing stuff. Do it but mind what thickness you buy.

The butyl tape could sag in heat. I used a dab of clear silicone, my posts were broken off and it's been holding just fine for over a year now.

+ on 3m tape.  The stock badges on my '98 VT1100C3 were put on with tape.  My brother put the badges on his '60 FLH 14yrs ago and they are still attached.  Plus, if you decide to remove them, you can do so very easily with some fishing line.
Cheers!
