clutch problem
« on: July 10, 2010, 02:37:06 PM »
I replaced the clutch discs and springs on my cb500-4. But the clutch has always been super hard to pull in. It worked ok for a while but now I have a big problem. Its still super hard to pull in,but now I have to re adjust the clutch every other ride because it starts to pull the bike forward in first gear after about an hour of riding. Will greasing the clutch throw the grease nipple fix this problem????

By adjusting the clutch do you mean the cable or the clutch adjustment on the engine case?

thanks I just read that and Its not really the same problem but thanks.I do have the same "cant find neutral" problem. whats happens to me is that I set the clutch on the engine case. Its stiff. then after I ride for a while I can be holding the clutch all the way in but It starts to engage little and progresively gets worse. Its the opposite of slipping.ecentialy I set the clutch and it "unsets" itself while I ride.I put some more  grease In the nipple, hopefully It fixes the issues. guess well see tommorow. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated

Well lets try this.
Adjust it to specs again. Use locktit on the locking nut for the adjuster so that it will not slip.
I take it your doing in town driving which would make using the clutch alot a normal thing.
use a black marker or something to mark the position of the lock nut to the adjuster screw. If it loosens again see if that mark has changed.

I might be a good idea to remove the cover and remove the clutch adjuster and lifter.  Clean these good (make sure you don't loose the ball bearing in the lifter when cleaning).  Re-grease these and put them back in.  If any of these are dry, it might cause the clutch to work hard and move out of adjustment.
