Different wheels for '78 750 super sport?
« on: February 14, 2006, 12:27:58 PM »
I have heard some uncomplimentary things about the DID wheels. Anyone know what other wheels would work with two discs in front and one in the back? Spoked wheels would make the Cafe Racer racier.    toma

I guess you mean the Comstars when you say DID?  DID manufactured rims for spoked wheels as well!  Comstars are tough and relatively light weight but imho butt ugly.  Spokers look realy nice but relpacing your comstars with spoked wheels, paticularly up front  is not such a straight forward process. As far as I know there really isn't any easy spoked factory wheel/rotor combo that will bolt up to your forks and work with your calipers.  This is a fairly common topic so search under dual disc conversions, Comstars, GL1000 front end etc etc.

Nice ride, toma!  I'm currently building a cafe racer out of a 78 supersport as well.  I had wondered about swapping out the Comstars for spokes a while back; I didn't really like the way they look.  After talking to some Honda old-timers around my area and discovering that the Comstars were pretty revolutionary "back in the day" I garnered a newfound appreciation for them.  Good luck!

I am having mine powdercoated satin black for a really different look, I'm thinking the black satin look will make them look more modern if not like aluminum rims.  I'll post some pics when completed.

Here's the recent thread where we talked about doing this.

I've got a 75 F wheel coming in the mail (spokes w/ disc brake) which everyone says should pretty much be a bolt on mod.  I'm planning on lacing it to a 16" rim for that fat tire.

I also have a GL1000 spoked double-disc wheel for the front that, just like eurban told me before, doesn't fit as a bolt on mod.  I'm in the process of collecting all of the GL1000 parts to replace my entire front end - trees, forks, brakes etc.   This is what you'll be in for if you really want to get rid of the ugly comstars.  I was pretty amazed when I found that this is really the most direct way to go. Eurban suggested that K rotors bolted up to the GL1000 wheel might get it to fit in the F forks, but I don't want to buy K rotors that I won't be able to use if they don't work. At least when I bought the wheel, I knew I'd get it to fit w/ a Gold Wing front end.

Anyways, good luck.  Your bike looks great by the way.

1977-78 Supersport front ends with comstar wheels are different than any other cb750 front end. They are not wider (although they are longer), the fork lowers are different to accomidate different calipers used with the comstar rim. The comstar rim uses a different brake rotor bolt pattern and the rotors themselves are a different thickness and overall width than a k bike. You can change whole suspension systems with other earlier bikes but you can't just bolt a spoke rim to the f1/f2 and expect the brakes to line up.

Someone here found a way to adapt fzr600 wheels (I like them, I use them on my kawi h1 streetfighter). The DOHC supersport guys have found a way to bolt on cbr600 f2 wheels to their bikes using only an adapter plate for the brakes in the front (plus spacers) and a little fab work for the brakes in the rear. I am fuzzy on the specifics of it but ask over at cb1100f.net for more info. I do know the cbr f2 axle diameter is the same as a cb750.

Thanks for all the good info but it sounds like changing the setup is more trouble than I want to go through.  I knew that some of you guys would know more about it than I could dig up in a month of searching. Thanks for saving me the digging.   Tom
