Anyone running drag bars?
« on: July 12, 2010, 04:19:07 PM »
Is anyone running drag bars? and if so what size? I just got my drag bars on my bike and found out that I have no room for my master cylinder assembly. It looks as though I need them to be at least 31"-32" wide for my throttle to be able to sit flush at the bars edge. I am having a hard time finding 7/8 drag bars 32" wide.

I have a 78cb750k

have a similar issue with my build.  master's banjo is up against bar mount when everything is in place.  throttle is right at end of bar.  can solve by going to a more modern master (shorter). :(  if you find bars though please post a link, as I would prefer to use the old round style master.

Hi,

I know it's a long way but a guy in Nelson, New Zealand makes custom Handle Bars.

http://www.thehandlebarcompany.com/

It says on his website that he will make to your specifications....

He's making me a set at the moment for my Cb400f.

Not sure what international shipping will cost, but with NZ to US dollar it shouldn't be that bad.

Cheers

Rich

I am running 28" drags, but haven't put on the master cylinder yet. Am I in trouble?

I am to the shop tomorrow to do some electrical prep, and talk to the painter about the tank.  will take a picture of my bar, with all stock 550 controls.

After a very quick search here are some pics for you.  Drag bars are doable, but take a bit of fancy engineering to make work.  Here ya go.

On my 550, I shaved down the edge of the gauge bracket a bit and got good fitment in there.

A buddy of mine runs drag bars and I'm half-way through installing mine. I recall him having some issues with the master but don't recall what the specifics were. I'll let you know how mine turns out.

I'm running 28" drags on mine. Had them drilled so I could run the wires internally.  Everything fits, but it does take some effort, especially the master cylinder.

why don't you cut two sections off your old bars your replacing and weld it to both ends? Grinding the welds smooth, giving you the length required. The grips will cover up the welds. Used this method and it works well.

Each time I see that bike I think it's Momma's Ride at first 033A2.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

If you're referring to the bike I'm thinking of, they are somewhat similar.  That ride is built more original than mine and is very nicely done.  I think mine has a more "hot rod" feel to it for lack of a better description (just my opinion though).

Did you raise the fork hight so the top bolts sit flush with the top of the triple tree or something? The fork top seems to be the main reason why the ms won't fit in there. I didn't want to start messing with my fork. Thanks for the pics, very nice bike.

The top of the fork tubes are flush with the top of the clamp.  The fork nuts actually sit just above the clamp once screwed in. I'm running -2 fork tubes and -2 shocks to lower the bike, so everything fits pretty well.  I can take some closer pics if needed.  Just let me know.

Some close pics would be great! So, does that mean you adjusted the forks then? pretty easy to do?

As requested, some close-up pics.  With the 2 inch shorter fork tubes, I was able to keep the top of the tubes level with the top of the clamp to get the lowered look I was after.  There is room to lower the front just a bit more by pushing the tubes up through the clamps if needed.  Hope these help.

Thanks for taking the time to take and post the pics man! After checking out some lowering kits, getting some 32" bars made up at a local shop is more in my budget. If I had more money I would do it the way you did, I'm thinking a can get a bar made for less than $20.

 8) It's looks like I only need about an inch to clear the issue. thanks!

Found a 1" set for $76.95 in case anyone else has the same problem with their drags.

I got my drags installed. I was prepared to use a riser but it was not necessary.

However, I have a home-made brake line setup so the banjo coming off the master makes an immediate 90 degree turn off the bolt. Clears everything just barely, but it works.

The 1" risers worked out perfect! and they really clean the look up too. The MC bolt sits against the right riser a little, but it fit's like a glove. I'm glad to hear you got yours figured out too.
