'71 CB350 Clutch Adjustment Issues
« on: July 03, 2010, 05:11:14 PM »
Howdy all,
Just picked up a 1971 CB350 twin with ~2,000 miles on it. My first bike! According to the previous owner it sat for ~20yrs, and then he acquired it and sorted it out for his wife to learn to ride on. She upgraded to a 550 and I got dumped by my girlfriend, so the 350 became mine!  8)

The only remaining niggle with the bike is a dragging clutch. At a stop it'll kill the bike unless I increase engine speed to around ~1500rpm. Frustrating for a new rider. The PO told me about this issue, and said that he tried to adjust it himself, but that he couldn't figure it out (I had some doubts about his mechanical abilities, and I know he got most of the restoration work done at a shop). He suggested that I could take it to his buddy's shop, but I prefer to do my own wrenching.

I gave the clutch adjustment a go, following the Honda shop manual, but could not find the sweet spot between the bike bogging at idle and the clutch slipping so much that it couldn't be kick started. Is this symptomatic of "deeper" clutch issues (aside from a fiddly adjuster mechanism)? Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks!

Sometimes the manuals can be a bit off, though they're better than recent Chinese translations of their products.  Adjustment should've been started down at the clutch, then you go to the first connection for the clutch cable, then up to the adjuster at the bars to fine tune.   Do the twins have an adjuster nut on the clutch cover?

PS  Isn't this a CB360?
