Clueless, but capable, 1976 CB 550 (f?)
« on: January 05, 2011, 11:18:49 AM »
I guess I've just been watching Cafe Racers too much.  Anyway, I just trailered home a 76 550 that, well, needs to be either parted out, or have a lot of loving attention thrown at it.  It came with new Dunlop Tires, a new battery, a "found" 4-1 side exhaust (not mounted), new chain (still in the box), inner tubes for the tires (still in the box), its original tank (beat up), a brown/black replacement tank (from a 77, we think, also kind of beat up), some brand spanking new airbox-to-carb adapters, a replacement wiring harness from the rectifier, and some other bits and pieces.

Missing for sure:

Key Ignition
Front Fender
Side Covers
Headlight Bucket assembly
My Common sense

Anyway, This looks like a proper place to say hello, and HELP!!

Have some pics.  Be honest.  It's not like I did this to it:

My Triumph gets a stablemate

The Spare Tank (I'm told it takes a different fuel petcock)

How Hard Could it Be?

Some of the bits and pieces

P.O. effort to restore the airbox

The Seat...not too bad, actually.

First off welcome!  I also have a '76 550, but mine is an F model.
I'm pretty sure your's is a K model, the giveaway is the sidestand being farther forward than "normal".
Looks like a nice project, I've seen a lot worse!

Good Luck!

Looks rough but seems to have potential.  Worse comes to worse you could sell some of the new stuff that came with it, part the bike and possibly make some money if you did not pay too much for it.  But I always prefer to bring them back to life...Larry

I'm pretty sure the seat, airbox (including the new intake adapters), rear fender, tailight, that extra tank, stock handlebars, and a few others are going to be put up for sale.  I'm 99.9% thinking of going cafe with this.  I picked up the required-sears bike lift last night, so there'll be a proper take-off-the-things-I-don't-want session.  I saw on the boards here that there is a local who might want the seat.

Sweet find, looks like the one i got a few months ago.

I think I have a headlight bucket laying around, and a front fender that the previous owner painted black.

What would you want for the seat? I'm not too sure if it would bolt up to my F frame.

How about a 24 hour help line when I get in over my head and am found wimpering in the corner? ;)

The hehadlight bucket might be a winner, as well as the fender.  I like a lot of the aftermarket stuff, but it might make it look to pretty.
