tank badge metal
« on: July 13, 2010, 07:34:53 PM »
is it safe to bend a tank badge? one of mine doesn't have quite enough curve so it doesn't conform to the tank properly. the metal looks like it might break if you tried to bend it.

It's ok to bend. Just be gentle.

I believe Yamiya recommends warming their replacement tank badges.

I believe they're diecast zinc, and that takes about 500 degrees F to get them to soften up.  I was able to VEEEEEEERY  GENTLY bend mine cold without cracking them.  Just take your time and be careful not to bend too far cause they don't like being bent back!

i didn't want to heat the metal to 500 degrees, so i bent it cold - this is a tank badge on a 76 cb750k - it did bend ok.
i found it took a good bit of force to start the metal moving. but i had to back off rapidly on the bending force once the metal started to give - it was a little surprising. not like bending iron. it would be easy to overdo it with this kind of metal, whatever it is, and bend too much.
