I went to try and get my 77 550k  MOT certified today and they would not pass me without a chainguard. Here's my problem, have a 750f2 swingarm, comstars and rear disk setup. The little 550 rear sprocket and the 750 chainguard look stupid and the 550 chainguard doesn't fit the swingarm. Any suggestions?

The one I have, although it sounds gash, looks quite effective.  It may even be an aftermarket item (I'm going from memory here, as I'm going back over 10 years since it was lost to the dark depths of my garage!).  It is essentially a couple of bits of lightwieght angle iron, welded together to pass over the chain and rear sprocket, plus brackets.  My bike never had problems passing its MOT with it on and it should be easy enough to fabricate.

mine is a length of 6mm alloy flat bar with two alloy angles to attach it to the swingarm made up from 3mm sheet. stuff you can get at a big hardware shop. i used epoxy(permatex cold weld) and pop rivets to attach every thing, and it hasn't moved in 60'000kms. legal and light. all you need is a drill, m6 bolts to attach it, and a big hammer. and a vice is good if you whack thigs with a big hammer. but aluminium is fun. get the brackety right and get creative!

Was the cahinguard for the K0 plastic?

I was looking at what claims to be the first CB750 imported into the UK and it had a plastic one fitted.
Was this standard or has it been replaced over the years. The owner wasn't about so I had no one to ask.

Also I dissapointed to note that it wasn't a sandcast, so can only presume none of the realy early bikes were officially imported. Probably explains why they go for so much over here.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

My K0 chaingaurd is plastic. It should have the short rear end on it also, in other words does not extend out to the rear but more or less follows the rear sprocket conture. Later guards were extended to try and keep chain lube off the rear rim.

I'm not sure when the gaurd changed to the longer version, but I believe it may have started with the K2. The K2 part has a different and 341 model code in the part.

K0 and K1 had the plastic chainguard. From K2 on it was replaced by the metal chainguard.

First versions (sandcasts and some K0's) had the short type. After complains of grease being thrown to the rim the chainguard was elongated, as well as some other changes like new ribbed front mudguard and fork legs.

Sandcasts were never OFFICIALY imported into UK, although quite a few are here now. So its quite possible to be an early UK model. There may have been a K0 press model but not even Honda can confirm or deny that one.
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

The original K0 changuard is 24 inches long & plastic. There was a Honda recall to replace them with a longer one. Lucky me...I have the short one.

I only say it was a recall, because it is mentioned as a must do in the Service Bulletins.

There was a pre-production bike that did a tour of the European bike shows, quite a few changes made prior to production, but I assume that went back to Japan in 69.

Can anyone send me a photo of an early - Sandcast or K0 - short rear chainguard. I have a long one, anddon't know what the short one looks like, so that I can start searching. A photo on a bike would be fine.

Does this look correct? I have a 'short' that I was sold that ain't like this. Mine has a completely straight front & not so curved at the back.

Here is what a I believe is a short chaingaurd. The later gaurds, rather than conforming to sprocket, extended further back to prevent oil, etc. from getting on the rear rim, or that was the theory anyway.

Thanks Bob. That looks like the one I aquired, not like the one in my photo.

Read somewhare that the original short is 24" long

Maybe the one in the photo is from a 500?

Been there...know that.  I added a short extension to my chainguard.
Unfortunately, that created two small holes in the guard. ::)

I know what you mean. I usually had a small duffel with camera, etc. on a luggage rack on most rides. It, and the underside of the luggage rack made great collection points for recycling chain lube.

I think there the same. I was checking out a 550F chrome one in the yard. Looks like new. Looks like it bolts up the same.
