Bad vibration at almost all speeds.
« on: July 15, 2010, 06:38:02 AM »
Not sure where to look first for this but it seems to be getting worse.

I get a strange up and down type vibration from the front wheel.  It shows up mostly at higher speeds especially when I come off the throttle.  It's a shaking up and down movement that is hard enough to shake my bar end mirror at times.

My fork seals are leaking, is this a sign that they are low in oil?  Or is this a wheel balance type of things?  I would think with wheel balance it would be just a vibration and not such a deliberate shaking.

Any ideas?

First, with the front wheel off the ground spin it to check to see if the rim is true and that the tire is properly mounted.

Too much fork oil can cause headshake, but if the seals are leaking anyway maybe it's a good time to disassemble for a good cleaning, new seals & oil.

Seals don't last forever, but often forktube pitting is a cause of leaks.

After you check the rim, tire, etc. Check the steering head bearings, if their bad consider
using tapered roller bearings.

And dont ride with leaking forks, oil will get on disc and pads just at the moment you need them most....

I am racing this weekend and just yesterday I discovered there was a very light leak in the forks, just back form the garage after changing the seals. It was a very light sweating but there were already traces on the calipers = bad for braking

Also check your engine mount bolts!!
I had a nasty vibration once and it turned out to
be a loose engine.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.
