I would get a bill of sale from the seller with a statement that he purchased the bike from the person on the title. Your seller may be liable for some sales tax. Another thing to look at is the title itself.........NY no longer titles vehicles that are more than 10 years old. The registration are title on older vehicles are one in the same. Do a Google search on the title seller.........maybe he lives just down the road.
I had this problem before... I had my mommy sign the statement of transaction form and sales tax form, as the original owners name was still on the title.... dmv never blinked,as she did a good job of making the signiture look the same...lol
But did he sign over the title to the man you got it from?If he did then I would get the man you bought it from to sign a bill of sale over to you.He may even need to fill out a form at the DMV since he never paid tax on his purchase.
