Registration/Title Question
« on: July 10, 2010, 06:32:36 PM »
I purchased my bike in NY State a year ago with a NY State title. However the person I bought it from is not the person on the title. He received the bike years ago and never applied for a title in his name as the new owner. The original owner, and name on the title may be dead! How do I get this bike registered? Can the man who sold me the bike fill out all of he bill of sale and DMV documents even though he is not on the title?

I would get a bill of sale from the seller with a statement that he purchased the bike from the person on the title. Your seller may be liable for some sales tax.

Another thing to look at is the title itself.........NY no longer titles vehicles that are more than 10 years old. The registration are title on older vehicles are one in the same.  Do a Google search on the title seller.........maybe he lives just down the road.

Wow it has been so long since I lived there ummmmm.
 ???
 :-\
you realy have me thinking on this LOL
The best way to find out is to call the DMV and see what they say. Did the origional owner sign the title over to the other person? If yes I would say he can.

I think the rule in NY is no title for a 1975 vehicle and older. I think the 10 years only applies to the odometer reading. As for the man on the title, I found out that he is alive, but in his 90's and not quite with it. It just keeps getting better.  :D

I had this problem before... I had my mommy  sign the statement of transaction form and sales  tax form, as the original owners name was still on the title.... dmv never blinked,as she did a good job  of making the signiture look the same...lol

But did he sign over the title to the man you got it from?
If he did then I would get the man you bought it from to sign a bill of sale over to you.
He may even need to fill out a form at the DMV since he never paid tax on his purchase.

I was wondering if that answer would pop up. I have the registration from in front of me right now. The previous owner doesn't even need to sign it unless the bike was sold for under fair market value, which it wasn't. So the only thing I need signed is a bill of sale.

Yeah, the 90 year old signed over the title, but the man who sold it to me never got a title in his name as the new owner. So I have the title signed by the old man, not the man who sold it to me.

Well if he is close to you then pay him a visit. See if he will give you a bill of sale. I will not say fake a signature as that is elegal or however you spell it. Does the guy you got it from have the bill of sale from when he bought it? if so get it and have him wright you one from him to you.

I am kind of having the same thoughts. I just picked up a bike with an Iowa title that the legal PO signed and dated in September 1983. Not sure how the WI DMV is going to take to the 1983. I thought of walking in there and telling them I am finally getting around to titling it but I would have only been 6 years old in 1983 so I doubt they will believe that story.

I just took the title and bill of sale which stated the previous title signer was no longer able to sign, and they took everything and gave me the reg.
