I don't have a luggage rack, so I bought the Cargo Basic ( model CAR022-BZ) from CycleGear. It was on sale for $49. I can strap it securely on the back of my seat in a couple minutes. It has pockets on each side and one at the rear. It holds a lot but it also has a zipper around the bottom that allows it to expand up to hold a helmet. I like it a lot.

I searched for the part number with no luck, but searched for Cargo Basic and this is what I found.

Looks to be about the size I'm looking for. You don't happen to have any pics with it on your bike do you?

I've got the cortech sport tailbag and it's worked out really well.  Not too big, but expandable when you need it.

But then I was looking for somehting that could pass as a briefcase.  Might be a bit big for what you're looking for.

Honestly, sizewise it sounds like you need a small tankbag.  you could always buy the non-magnetic variety and strap it to the back seat.

I use a courier bag. Holds plenty of stuff, and looks cool. Bags on bikes just look too....baggy.

Very true...... I was hoping there was something custom fit for our bikes.

My thoughts exactly. I wear a backpack sometimes......but it sure would be nice to not have the weight on you back.

Think I might build some kind of rack system to attach to the grab rail to give me a nice mounting spot.  because I do like to slide around on the seat a lot. I'll keep thinking, thanks for the input.

Cbowers,
yes, that's the one I bought. It may not be a beautiful addition to a bike, but I'm an old guy and don't really give a crap what people think of what I or my bike look like. I still like the bag and I have always hated tank bags, so, there you go.
