starting problem
« on: July 17, 2010, 07:44:51 PM »
I have tried 3 different new batteries. 1 from autozone, 1 from Oreilly, and one from advance. none of these will crank the bike over, the closest was the a/z battery it did hlaf a revolution. the battery voltage drops to 6v while cranking and i have tried voltage drop testing and found nothing. is it possible to get 3 bad batteries or could it be the starter. i have removed the starter and the armature looks clean and the brushes are plenty thick. i need ideas! if it is junk batteries where should i get one? also fyi i do not have a 700ma charger, but i use a 2a automatic charger that i have used for several batteries and never had an issue with it before. i am just at my wits end here.

Get a reading of the battery before trying to start the bike. It is real unusual that you would get that many bad bateries. My thoughts are something is pulling down the starting system hard.
Pull the starter and test to with the battery off the bike. see if it is pulling allot of juice.
What is the difference in battery voltage from key off to key on?

Could be starter or bad connection. Check voltage as vern suggests.
Can you kick start?

Will the starter spin like mad out of the motor when connected to the battery... hope you tried that while it was out of the bike ?
If it was good, look at 3 things, first the + cable where it passes thru' the starter cover for possible short to ground, the battery ground wire connection at the frame and the solenoid ( jump the big terminals with a heavy piece of wire )...... good luck.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

So it wasn't really a junk yard after all. A gold mine I reckon.  ;)
