wiring help.please
« on: July 16, 2010, 02:29:09 PM »
hello.
hope somone can give me a hand figuring out what I need to change to be able to have the bike run when I hit the on/off switch for my headlight.
this s whats new single state reg/rec, starter silenoid, battery, stator is pulling the right amount of amps,
Ill try to expalin the best I can. Im using the old ignition switch that came on my 1975 cb550 4 wires coming off bat, ignition, brown an white an brown one is for acc that i figure out but that is the second position on the switch so bike wont fire or run with key set to acc,
I have rewired the bike using a simple wiring diagram http://cycles.evanfell.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Custom_Motorcycle_Wiring_Diagram_by_Evan_Fell.png like the one i listed above.
Off the key switch I have black for my ignition running back to the black wire on the rec reg, red wire off switch runs back to the starter silenoid, red wire off the rec/reg is wired to the starter silenoid . you following me or have i lost you? rest of the reg rec wire are wired to the stato wires. So now for the problem I have my head light, speedo, tach lights wired together all grounded inside the headlight bucket i have a red wire coming off to supply power to them I have that red wire pigtailed into the black ignition wire i mention above bike wont start if i unplug the power supply to the lights from the ignition wire bike fires right up? I noticed on the diagram i listed above the lights need to be wired to the acc but like i said on the cb550 key switch when i have it turned to that second position for acc bike wont start . so do you think i might need to run a relay in between the wire suppling the power to th lights an ignition wire? maybe try a new ignitin switch that only has 2 postion on the key but also has a acc inlet? any help wuld be appreciated thanks paul

It is because your post is illegible, I think.
Try making sense.

Also, why don't you try wiring it up correctly, and see what happens?
From what I can decipher, your post says:
"I wired my bike wrong, now it wont start? Should I wire it wrong-er?"

It sounds like you have the ignition and all the lights running off the same circuit.
you could be pulling to much away from the coils with all the lights on.
I know the lights are on like they should be. but if you unplug the red feed wire to them and it starts them I think your pulling to much from the ignition circuit due to the lights.

cameron, It doesnt say the bike wont start the bike dies if i turn the light switch on, but i will assume you dont know about wiring after reading your reply.

thank you vern I will try running a different supply wire to the headlight an see if that doesnt work.  Should I just run a supply wire off te starter silenoid or see what wire off the reg/rec has power with the ignition on an run it off of that one.. thanks
The bike fired up an ran fine with the headlight on a couple days ago the way I had it wired but I took it for a night ride an eventually the bike just died, turned the light off a bike fired back up an road it home.

Sounds like your bike is running off the battery and not the alternator, since once you turned off the headlight it fired right up.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Yeah Your right , I just hooked up a small battery charger to it an  fired it up hook up the light to it an the light turned on, als called to see how many amps the small gel batteries are an how many amps the headlight pulls, do you know what wire off the stator or reg/rec to hook the light up to so it works right? thanks you for your reply

i think I got it figure out. on the single state reg/rec I bought it oly had one green wire were as the oem reg has a green wire an the rec also has a green wire. on the oem one i just replaced it looks to me like the green wire on the bottom side of the rec is a ground an the green wire comig from the oem reg is tied into that, so on the new reg with the single green wire I have it tied into the stator green wire with it pigtailed to a ground wire. I just took the bike for a 15mile ride the light stayed on bike road good. does this sound like i could have been the problem?
thanks paul
