Ignition wiring problem 75 CB550f
« on: July 16, 2010, 09:36:01 PM »
The other day it was difficult getting the key turned to the right spot to start my bike.
Tonight there was no sweet spot, the lights to start never came on and I couldn't start the bike.
The Parking light goes on in P. Do I need a new ignition switch? Anyone got any advice?

If thats the one with the switch inbetween the clocks it sounds like the electrical bit has fallen off the bottom

Though your English wasn't perfect, your advice was.
Thanks.

The Breakdown:
Ignition suddenly isn't making contact (lights are not lighting when key is turned to On).

Reason: Corrosion inside of Ingnition switch (white connector under tach and speedometer and Ignition cluster, behind headlamp).

Fix: Take off headlamp unless you can work around it. With screwdriver push in tabs along round white ignition switch and pull from back of metal ignition. Unplug from connection. With tiny screwdriver pry open swith body. Inside you'll find springs and little ramps as well as round copper leads that the switch directs to depending on what position your key is in. The Problem I had: A copper lead had accreted a chunk of corrosion on it that prevented the copper leads from meeeting. The Solution: Scrub that biyatch free of gunk and reassable switch. Put back together. Ride home smiling.

On an EMGO ignition switch, like Strynboen said, I found that the plastic clips came out too easily and used JB Weld to make it stay.
