Can I clean calipers withhhhh
« on: July 16, 2010, 08:27:49 PM »
So I cant sleep and I just got my "new" rear caliper from a great dude on here. Needless to say its a 30yr old caliper that needs to be cleaned before I put it on.

So can I use 000 steel wool to clean it or should I get something else to clean it with. I really dont want to ruin this caliper.

Personally, I like to go with sandblast and powdercoat. if you have a compressor handy, you can jury rig a blaster.

I purchased a cheep siphen type sandblaster for only $12 and used sand from my kids sandbox to blast mine with. Then I used high heat clear coat from a can. It was cheep and looks great.

actually, I used play sand too (run through a screen to remove the large stuff).  It worked well.

Dunno which one of us you were referring to, but I did the gravity feed thing and used a plastic tote with a sheet of glass on top and holes in the side.  The sand was too heavy and didn't pull up using suction.  Mine's disassembled now, but here's a couple of threads explaining what to do.

If you are using sand, please be aware of the dangers of silica-based blast mediums:

If you are talking about cleaning the inside of the bore and groove where the piston and seal goes use the finest grade like #0000. On the outside for prep etc work it over with some 400 wet-dry after it is degreased.
