I just purchased a CB750 parts bike as a restoration project, and it has some heavy rust on the wheel spokes and the top parts of the fork tubes.  Do the gurus here suggest complete replacement of these parts, or is it possible to salvage what I have by sanding and painting, or replace and relacing the spokes?  I'm trying to keep the cost of this project down because graduate students aren't afforded lavish stipends.

Try CLR and a rag to get the surface rust off. you can get CLR at most department stores like Wal-Mart

I still have some of the Zep stuff leftover from de-rusting a Puch Maxi I recently resurrected.  But in your opinion, do you believe the wheels to still be structurally sound?  I will post detailed pictures of the rusty spokes and fork shortly.

It's hard to tell by the pic. That bike uses tube type tires. If it is just surface rust then I would say they are ok. If the rust around the spokes is DEEP into the metal you may want to get different rims.
The spokes are replaceable items. The forlk tubes well it all depends on how deep it is into the tube.

Briefly perusing online, spokes are pretty expensive (~45/set) unless I'm looking in all of the wrong places...
