The way i do it on my 650 is remove the right side timing cover on the crankshaft, remove the plugs, you will need a large @7/8 socket and bar to fit the timing assy,nut.
{you can do this with plugs in but it is harder to fight compression}.
bike should be cold.
loosen the 8mm tension nut {between carb 2and 3} on back of cyl. head @ 2 turns ...then
slowly turn the engine crankshaft,CLOCKWISE {do NOT turn backwards} 3 revolutions, on the
4th revolution slowly retighten the 8mm tension nut. it IS small do not overtighten.
replace the timing cover.
A good Clymer, or haynes manual has all of this + pics. and is a good investment.
