installing my dyna ignition - foolproof EXCEPT...
« on: February 16, 2006, 09:22:30 PM »
EXCEPT for my blinding ignorance... ;D

I have a little instruction sheet that gives me step-by-step instructions that are clear, well-written and easy to understand, UNTIL i get to Step 6:

"6)   On some 550 and 750 models, a small pin will be seen projecting from the 1-4 side of the advance assembly shaft. This pin must be removed, and can be, by gently tapping on the side of the pin with a screwdriver and hammer."

#1. What is the "1-4 side"?

#2. pin removal..."GENTLY TAPPING"? - am i to snap the little pin off? GENTLE tapping i have done and the pin is still there - it does not seem to be an inserted pin, rather a solid pin that is a part of the advance assembly shaft.

Any help will be appreciated, Thanks in "advance", guys...

the 1-4 side is the left hand side if you have the wires going out at the bottom.

mine didn't have the pin, so i can't help you there.

okay. i have (had) the wires going out at the bottom, if by that you mean - the red and green went out through a rubber grommet on the lower half of the ignition casing...

and by "left" you mean, rear - as in towards the rear of the bike?

why is it 1-4?

Hey CBJ, what sort of Dyna ignition are you fitting? That 1 & 4 thing probably refers to the side the 1 & 4 coil mounts onto your frame, but is a pretty dumb description, what's wrong with "The kick starter side", or the "Gear pedal side"? Anyway, unless it's a Dyna 2000 or better, leave that pin in place, or your advance unit won't, er, advance!

If it's one of them fancy-schmancy Dyna 200's that I can't afford, don't ask me 'cos I'm so jealous I'd just lie to ya anyway, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

naw it's not a 2000 - its a ...#$%*... a DS-2, or 1, hell it's not complicated, but i'm glad you think that is a dumb description - there was nothing at all helpful in my shop manual and i sure as hell wasn't gonna shear off that pin without being damn sure of it.

y'know Z-1 has the Dynas for 120 bux...i have a link if you want to check it out... 'course shipping to OZ is prob. killer....

it's 1-4 because it fires the 1 & 4 cylinders.  yeah, it's on the side toward the rear of the bike.

Thanks CBJ, yours is a Dyna S, dunno why they tell you to remove that pin, it locates the advance unit which you'll still need with the "S". On the Dyna 2000's (damn I want one!) they don't use the advance unit, as you can programme your own multiple advance curves into it, boo hoo! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Would that be the "backside"? ;D

It's been over a year since I installed my Dyna so the specifics are a bit hazy. The instructions are not referring to the locater pin on the back of the assembly, that stays. The cam on the front of the assembly that opens and closes the points gets replaced by the black sensor? provided by Dyna. There is a removable pin on the front of the assembly that would interfere with the new sensor?, if memory serves. My bike is a '78 750F and I had to remove a pin.

Oh yeah, the "1-4 side" refers to the side of the ignition advance that is stamped T,F  1[]4.
