Anyone running a 17X48 sprocket combo?
« on: July 18, 2010, 04:43:53 PM »
I was wondering if anyone was running a 17X48 sprocket combo instead of the stock 18X48 on the early CB750K. 17X48 was used for a short period on K1s and is quite similar gear ratio to the original 16X45 used on the K0s and the 18 was supposed to put less stress on the chain. But, what advantage do you see in running a 17/48 over a 18X48 given that chains don't break anymore?

My K1 came with 17/48 sprockets, and that's all I've ever run on it so I can't give a comparison.  You will have quicker acelleration off the line, and somewhat higher rpm on the highway.

17 was the first thing we did to get acceleration back in the day. now I think i want an 18 on my 836.

What Gordon said.  17x48 is stock for the 750F0/F1.  You will run a few hundred rpm higher at cruising speed on the highway.

I put a 17 (front) on my K6 at the behest of HMan and I love it.  It will (before I started tearing the engine down) pull the front wheel off the ground from a roll without popping the clutch (I'm 200 lbs).  Low speed manageability is improved.  I can't imagine doing it any differently now.

Well that's it then. I just wish I could do it without removing the chain.

Why would you remove the chain? You can loosen the back wheel, push it all the way forward, take off the front sprocket with a 19mm socket, replace with 17 tooth sprocket and retighten chain...at no point is the chain removed...you just insert the sprocket into the chain and put on shaft. This is what I do.

good luck

Seriously? I was under the impression it was too tight in there even with the rear tire all the way forward. It's a Diamond Powersport chain so a pain to get apart. I'm going to do it today then. Do you recall the torque on the counter sprocket bolts?

I have an RK O-ring chain and the sprocket fits in ok. Its a tight fit and sprocket has to be aligned with the shaft to get it on smoothly but it does it. No idea about the torque - I use hand torque ;).

good luck

Tighten it till it strips than back it off a half turn. Caveman torque wrench.

Here's a torque table:
http://www.salocal.com/sohc/tech/torquetable.htm

Could be on the main site already, don't know, should be.

Drive sprocket bolts about 5.1 to 10.8 ft/lbs (60 to 130 in/lbs). Not much really.

Thanks.
And Don, perhaps I could practice on yours first - just to get the feel for it.
