Tight chain impact tranny?
« on: June 10, 2010, 06:58:17 AM »
Okay, this is probably a stupid question but before I start stripping my bike again to see what's happening inside my tranny, I was wondering...can a drive chain that is too tight impact transimission performance?

and in case your not familiar with or have forgotten my sad story...I have a '76 Honda CB750K which I have split and replaced the tranny once but still have a "slipping second gear...which I mean to be, that when I accelerate after shifting into second it starts jolt in and out gear or even slip totally into a false neutral.  Now the bike likes into gear (i can't shift it at all sometimes) think is just the tranny starting to fail...time to go in I think but thought I'd ask...thx all!...ron.

I don't think so but loosen it and check.

A tight chaiin likely wouldn't hurt the transmission of a CB750 much if at all as we have a third shaft, the primary drive shaft that holds the sprocket. Now you will accelerate the wear on the final drive output bearing, but its on that third final drive shaft.

The final drive shaft is short and stout and not likely to bend affecting the other 2 shafts which hold all the trans gears.

Other bikes just have the two shafts with the sprocket on the countershaft. There the too tight chain has a chance to affect something, but even that is a long shot in my mind. Still just affecting the bearing closest to the sprocket.
